Welcoming us at the headquarters, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chung, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, informed: Muong Chien Commune was established on the basis of merging Muong Chien, Chieng Khay and Ca Nang communes. At this time, along with stabilizing the organizational apparatus, the commune is focusing on reviewing and evaluating the current infrastructure status as well as the potential and advantages of economic development, to have specific solutions. Effectively using capital from programs and projects, supporting people to convert ineffective areas to grow fruit trees, renovating mixed gardens. Mobilizing the establishment of cooperatives to link production according to VietGAP processes, and consuming products. Coordinating to organize for households to visit and learn about fruit tree growing models in localities. Up to now, the whole commune has 6 cooperatives, with more than 50 members; in addition to creating jobs for members, the cooperatives also create stable jobs for 20 local workers, with an average income of 4.5 million VND/person/month. At the same time, effectively exploit traditional cultural values, ethnic costumes, good customs and practices, brocade embroidery, bamboo and rattan weaving; hot spring area in Bon village, to develop community tourism.
Returning to Phieng Bay village, the hillsides that previously grew corn and cassava have been replaced by fruit trees and other high-value crops. Visiting the medicinal and fruit tree growing model of Mr. Tan Van Pat's family, Phieng Bay village, one of the pioneering households in crop conversion, bringing high income, Mr. Pat shared: In 2019, the family gradually converted the corn growing area to cinnamon, macadamia, and Taiwanese mango. Up to now, the family has 4 hectares of Taiwanese mango, macadamia trees; 4 hectares of cinnamon trees and 1 hectare of cardamom under the forest canopy. The average income is 300 million VND/year.
From the effectiveness of Mr. Pat's economic model, many households in Phieng Bay village have followed suit. Currently, villagers grow and care for 5 hectares of fruit trees; 100 hectares of cinnamon; 8 hectares of macadamia; intensively cultivate nearly 40 hectares of two-crop rice fields; more than 90 hectares of high-yield corn and cassava; raise nearly 1,000 cattle, more than 2,000 poultry... The whole village has 212 households, of which only 10 are poor.
In Pa Lo village, after visiting several provinces and surveying the market demand for medicinal plants, in 2022, Mr. Lo Van Chau mobilized 11 households to establish Nhan Thuan Cooperative specializing in growing medicinal plants under the forest canopy, with an initial scale of 3 hectares. To date, the Cooperative has about 60 hectares of millennium trees grown under the forest canopy, of which 7 hectares have been harvested, with a yield of 30 tons of fresh tubers/ha, selling price of 4,500 VND/kg; after deducting costs, the profit is about 50 million VND/ha.
Mr. Lo Van Chau, Director of Nhan Thuan Cooperative, said: The initial cost of planting 1 hectare of millennium is about 50 million VND. After 3 years of planting, the harvest begins, the harvest period lasts from 15-20 years. Currently, the Cooperative is testing 2 hectares of coffee trees, the trees are growing well. In the coming time, the Cooperative hopes to access preferential loans to expand the scale of medicinal plant cultivation; promote, find stable output for products, create jobs and increase income for members and people participating in the model.
With hard-working hands and innovative thinking, Muong Chien people have been exploiting the advantages of economic development. The whole commune currently cultivates more than 2,000 hectares of grain crops; nearly 500 hectares of fruit trees, macadamia, coffee; manages and protects more than 12,000 hectares of forest, nearly 300 hectares of cinnamon trees; exploits nearly 50 hectares of water surface of Son La hydroelectric reservoir to develop cage fish farming; raises 122,240 cattle and poultry. The average income of the commune reaches 45 million VND/person/year; the poverty rate is only 10%.
Following the new local government model, with expanded development space, we believe that Muong Chien will awaken its potentials and advantages, have more powerful breakthroughs, and increase people's income.
