At least three people were killed (including the perpetrator) and six others were injured in a shooting in Auckland, New Zealand, just hours before the start of the 2023 Women's World Cup. This is also the city where the Vietnamese women's team will stay during the tournament.
The shooting did not affect coach Mai Duc Chung and his players. The Vietnamese women's team still went to practice as planned and security was ensured by the organizers.
Vietnam will play in Auckland on July 22 against the United States in their opening match at the 2023 Women's World Cup.
New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the 2023 Women's World Cup will go ahead as scheduled, insisting the shooting was an individual act. New Zealand has not raised its security alert, although police have been beefed up in Auckland to ensure safety for the 2023 Women's World Cup.
According to Reuters, the location of the shooting was very close to the hotel where some teams attending the Women's World Cup were staying. The Vietnamese women's team stayed at the Rydges Hotel, about 5km from the scene. The training ground of coach Mai Duc Chung and his team was not near the location of the shooting.
"Everyone is calm and preparing as usual for tonight's game," Norway captain Maren Mjelde assured his home fans. Norway will play New Zealand in the opening match of the 2023 Women's World Cup at 2 p.m. today (July 20, Vietnam time) at Eden Park.
New Zealand's National Stadium in Auckland is also where the Vietnamese team will play their first match at the Women's World Cup on July 22. Coach Mai Duc Chung and his players will face the US team.
