Tong Minh Hoang and the desire to enhance the value of grapevines

Graduated with a bachelor's degree in Land Management from Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, 9X guy Tong Minh Hoang (born in 1993, Phuoc Loi village, Ninh Phuoc commune) gave up the opportunity to work with a high salary in a bustling urban area, returned to his hometown to start a business in a field that his family never thought of - that is clean grape production. Because the desire to increase the value of grape trees, as well as help his family reduce the hardship in the fields for Hoang is greater than anything!

Pioneering change in traditional grapevines

From the experience of his father - who has been growing grapes for more than 40 years, Tong Minh Hoang realized that: For a long time, grape farmers often harvest 3 crops per year, so the use of chemical fertilizers is inevitable. If exploited like that, the grape trees will age quickly, the ability to produce fruit is low; applying too much chemical fertilizer also makes the soil quickly lose its fertility and makes the product unsafe, so it is difficult to be accepted by the market. Besides, the traditional red Cardinal grape and green NH01-48 grape that the family is cultivating are no longer favored by consumers, low price, unable to compete with imported seedless fresh grape varieties...

“Thinking is doing”, in early 2020, Minh Hoang pioneered the introduction of seedless black summer grapes to grow on his family farm with an area of 1 sao. After nearly 1 year of self-study and research, “eating and sleeping” next to the new grape roots, Minh Hoang harvested 1.5 tons of fresh grapes, with a selling price of 200,000 - 250,000 VND/kg, earning more than 300 million VND from the first crop.

Realizing the obvious economic efficiency of the new seedless grape variety compared to traditional local grape varieties, Minh Hoang continues to invest billions of VND to expand the scale of the black grape garden along with many other new seedless grape varieties. In addition, the persistence in producing two crops per year and actively applying the clean grape production process, high-tech grapes have produced large, plump, heavy bunches of fruit, with a variety of flavors and colors... favored by consumers, as well as attracting a large number of tourists to "witness" and enjoy fresh grapes right in the garden.

Welcoming guests with a gentle smile and sweat still on his forehead, Minh Hoang enthusiastically introduced his family's farm: "Hoang Yen Farm is growing 8 grape varieties, including: Black Summer, Black Finger, Peony (mango milk flavor), green grapes, Japanese pink, candy, passion grapes (passion fruit flavor) and traditional red grapes, on a total area of nearly 5 hectares. Of which, there are 3 fresh grape products that have achieved 3-star OCOP certification, including: Peony, Black Summer and traditional red grapes. With prices ranging from 70,000 to 300,000 VND/kg, each year, the farm supplies the market with 15 to 20 tons of fresh grapes, earning billions of VND in profit. Currently, I am researching and testing a few new grape varieties, which will soon be introduced to tourists and the market by the end of this year."

Not only developing clean grape production, Minh Hoang also expands the production of high-quality grape varieties; invests in building tourist destinations and cooperates in producing some grape-processed products, to serve the diverse needs of tourists when coming to the farm. “Hoang Yen Farm is not only a place to grow agricultural products, but also a place to spread energy by connecting people with the land and sky. When enjoying a bunch of sweet grapes or a delicious apple, visitors are invited to join an emotional journey. Macrobiotics with healthy agricultural products help the body and soul become healthy and happy” - Minh Hoang said.

With the supply of thousands of seedlings to the market with a revenue of about 300 million VND/month; the number of visitors to the farm averages from 1,000 to 2,000/month, the young man born in the 90s Minh Hoang has realized the goal of increasing the value of grapevines, or in other words, successfully getting rich from grapevines in the "grape capital".

Building a “digital agriculture ” community

“Good news travels fast”, Minh Hoang’s modern ecological agricultural model has attracted the attention of many people, especially young people who are passionate about starting a business in a green and sustainable direction. With the motto “if you want to go far, you have to go together”, Minh Hoang soon built a YouTube and Facebook channel. Currently, each channel has more than 17,000 subscribers. Clips sharing about the model, how to grow and care for grapes... as well as livestream sales sessions have helped Minh Hoang successfully build a “digital agriculture” community. According to Minh Hoang, small-scale, inefficient production models and lack of value chain linkages have always been obstacles to the progress of the province’s agriculture and Vietnam in general. Therefore, in addition to investing in production technology, focusing on market development... digital transformation will help farmers improve productivity, quality, optimize production, reduce costs, provide transparent information, and connect supply and demand.

With the belief that "I do not seek glory for myself, so what I have learned and known, I am willing to share honestly when cooperating", Minh Hoang has successfully transferred nearly 50 hectares of grape cultivation models across the country (including large and small tourist areas, economic gardeners and individual models), for example: Yen Valley Da Nang, Suoi Tien cultural tourism area in Ho Chi Minh City, Son Tien tourist area in Dong Nai...; At the same time, coordinating with many universities as well as startup clubs in and outside the province, organizing many "knowledge trips", workshops... sharing from expertise, experience to inspiration for startups, starting a business for students, pupils, and young people who want to start a business from grapes. Promoting the spirit of "saying must go hand in hand with doing", Minh Hoang is sure that what he says to his partners is what he has done and will do.

With the results and contributions to agricultural development, Tong Minh Hoang was nominated by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union for the 2024 National Outstanding Farmer Award. "Thank you for the opportunity that connected me to the grape growing profession, thank you for being patient enough to cultivate, thank you for the trust of strangers who have become friends. Being able to walk on this path, I know I have to say thank you" - are the words that Minh Hoang shared with his "digital agriculture" community, considering this a great source of encouragement for the long journey ahead that he himself pursues.
