“Leverage” for Ha Nam tourism on the threshold of merger

Located near the capital Hanoi, with investment in infrastructure, services and new tourism products, Ha Nam has recently become an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists.

In the new development context, Ha Nam strives to build linked products, identify key tourism products as "leverage", contributing to promoting socio -economic development of the whole region.

Promoting the advantage of Hanoi as a "gateway"

Located as the southern gateway to Hanoi, in the key economic region of the North, Ha Nam has a convenient transportation network connecting with Hanoi and neighboring provinces. Currently, Ha Nam has many famous landscapes such as Tam Chuc Lake, Ngu Dong Son, Luon Cave, Bat Canh Son, Kem Trong... In addition, Ha Nam also possesses a huge treasure of diverse and rich tangible and intangible cultural heritages - an important resource for developing local tourism.

According to statistics, the province currently has nearly 2,000 historical and cultural relics and many large festivals, typically Tran Thuong Temple, Lanh Giang Temple, Ba Danh Pagoda, Long Doi Son Pagoda, Tich Dien Festival, Wrestling Festival... Over the years, Ha Nam has become an ideal destination for spiritual and cultural tourism. In particular, since Tam Chuc Tourist Area - a large spiritual landscape complex - began to open to visitors (in 2019), Ha Nam has quickly become one of the new destinations, attracting domestic and foreign tourists.

Up to now, Tam Chuc Tourist Area has basically met the criteria of a national tourist area with a synchronous technical infrastructure system and high-quality tourism products. This place has become a venue for many major Buddhist events such as the United Nations Vesak Festival in 2019, welcoming more than 20,000 delegates and thousands of Buddhists to attend...

According to Permanent Vice Chairman of Ha Nam Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Anh Chuc, the province has convenient connection space with major spiritual tourism centers such as Huong Pagoda (Hanoi), Trang An - Bai Dinh (Ninh Binh), Pho Hien (Hung Yen)... This is an ideal condition for Ha Nam to develop inter-regional tourism, especially spiritual tourism and cultural - heritage tourism.

Innovation to “take off”

In recent years, Ha Nam has made strong changes, especially in investing in infrastructure, services, accommodation facilities and developing new tourism products, creating a "new breeze" for the local tourism industry. Currently, the province has more than 200 accommodation facilities and many attractive entertainment tourism products invested by large corporations such as Sun World Ha Nam Water Park, walking streets, international standard golf courses, etc.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Nam province, in 2024, the locality welcomed 4.7 million visitors, earning nearly VND3,700 billion. In the first 5 months of 2025, the number of tourists reached nearly 6 million, earning more than VND4,500 billion. Notably, the World Travel Awards honored Ha Nam as "The World's Leading Cultural Destination" and "Asia's Leading Emerging Tourist Destination".

Assessing this remarkable development, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Economic Institute, commented that Ha Nam is emerging as a typical destination, clearly demonstrating the desire to develop tourism.

Although Ha Nam tourism has made a clear mark, according to experts, the locality still lacks a synchronous service ecosystem around major tourist destinations. In the upcoming administrative boundary merger policy, Ha Nam will merge with Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh into a new province named "Ninh Binh" - a great opportunity but also poses many challenges in tourism management, building new inter-regional products...

In order for Ha Nam tourism to “take off”, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien believes that the resonance between Tam Chuc (Ha Nam), Bai Dinh (Ninh Binh) and the extended connection to Huong Son (Hanoi)... is forming a heritage connection of special value. In order for this interconnected tourism product system to develop strongly, Ha Nam needs to have close coordination with tourism businesses.

From a business perspective, Director of VietSense Travel Company Nguyen Van Tai said that, regardless of the stage, Ha Nam and other localities need to have a systematic product planning, synchronous infrastructure investment and scientific and harmonious destination branding.

According to Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration Phan Linh Chi, after the merger, Ninh Binh needs to strengthen regional links with Hanoi to build integrated tours with themes such as "Spiritual Journey" or "Heritage Tourism". In addition, it is necessary to promote and advertise tourism in a modern direction, applying digital technology and multi-platform communication, especially targeting the international market and trends such as MICE tourism, resorts, and green tourism.

Recently, Ha Nam province has signed cooperation agreements with many partners to promote tourism development. Vice President of the Hanoi UNESCO Club Nguyen Tuan Anh said that the club is implementing a plan to establish a travel alliance to develop strategic tourism products, starting with the program "Ha Nam two days", expected to launch on weekends from now until the end of September. This model aims to build quality products, reasonable prices, effectively exploit domestic and international markets, creating attractive linked products between Ha Nam - Hanoi and neighboring provinces.
