Students of Phenikaa University have created “CareCab - An application providing customer support services for medical examination and treatment at medical facilities” to provide a “companion” to patients during the medical examination and treatment process, especially when relatives cannot be there.
The project received high praise and successfully entered the final round of the Phenikaa Student Innovation - Entrepreneurship Competition 2024 (PSI 2024).
5 talented students join forces
The project "CareCab - Application providing customer support services for medical examination and treatment at medical facilities" is a startup project of 5 students including: Le Quynh Trang, Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Nguyen Trong Quy of class K15DD, all 4th year students majoring in Nursing; Nguyen Van Hieu of class K16KHMT, 3rd year student majoring in Computer Science and Truong Hien Vy of class K16DD, 3rd year student majoring in Nursing.
Regarding the initial idea, student Le Quynh Trang - representative of the group said that during a discussion with teachers in the department, the group heard a real story shared. Specifically, there was a teacher who lived and worked in Hanoi , while her family and relatives were still in the countryside. Whenever a relative from the countryside came to Hanoi for a medical examination, she often received a call asking her to arrange a pick-up. However, due to her busy work, she could not always respond to these requests and often felt guilty when having to refuse.
From there, the idea of a service to support patients to see a doctor was formed, to meet the needs of both patients and busy people who want to support their relatives.
Dr. Hoang Thi Xuan Huong - lecturer of the Faculty of Nursing, Phenikaa University, is the group's instructor and said: "We realize that life is very busy nowadays, sometimes there is no time to take relatives to see a doctor, while letting relatives go alone sometimes makes us worried. From here, the idea of connecting people's needs with the expertise of health students began to form".
Optimize resources are health students and medical staff
The CareCab application is built based on the model of popular ride-hailing applications today such as Grab, Be, Uber,... but is specifically designed to meet the needs of medical care. CareCab is a platform connecting two main subjects: customers - those who need medical examination support and partners - those who provide support services.
When needing to visit a doctor or needing to assist a relative to go to a medical facility, customers just need to open CareCab and perform a few simple steps, including selecting a medical facility, time (day, hour), support person and means of transportation. The application will summarize the customer's needs and provide a specific quote. After payment, the support person will contact the customer directly to make detailed arrangements. After completing the service, customers can rate the support person and provide feedback on their experience using the application, helping the team improve the customer reception and care process, Quynh Trang, a representative of the team, shared.

The CareCab app primarily provides services for booking a support person to pick up and drop off customers for medical examinations, scheduling appointments/re-examinations, and advanced options such as special care services, depending on the customer's needs.
CareCab's target partners include medical students and medical staff who want to earn extra income, because this is a group with knowledge of medical examination and treatment processes and familiarity with administrative procedures and hospital diagrams. CareCab's target customers are people with chronic diseases who often have to go to the hospital for check-ups; busy people who do not have time to pick up and drop off their relatives; people who have difficulty traveling, and foreigners living in Vietnam who face language barriers when going to the hospital.
According to Ms. Huong: "Medical and nursing students all have certain professional skills in health and patient care, but in reality, they often do extra work unrelated to their field of study with very low salaries, only about 20,000 VND/hour. By participating in this project, they can both apply their knowledge and earn a more significant income."
Interdisciplinary cooperation - taking advantage of Phenikaa University's multidisciplinary advantages
Evaluating the group’s startup project, Dr. Huong said that CareCab is a potential, creative and practical idea, helping nursing students develop their specialized knowledge in a new startup model. The project not only meets the practical needs of healthcare support but also takes advantage of interdisciplinary coordination at Phenikaa University, especially the combination of healthcare and information technology.
Cooperation between students of different majors at Phenikaa University is also easy thanks to clubs and teams in the school. In addition, the training program also supports students in developing start-up projects, helping them understand the process from theory to practice.
Ms. Huong emphasized that a technology project in the health sector can hardly succeed without interdisciplinary cooperation. Students, regardless of their major, need to develop a sense of multidisciplinary work to improve work efficiency and better meet the needs of the community and customers.
