Mr. Cil Bruis, a resident of Lac Duong commune, where Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park is located, noted: “For people like us who live near the forest, going into the forest is a daily routine. We know every path and turn in the forest very well. But for those of us living in the city, equipping ourselves with knowledge about the forest before embarking on a trip to explore its habitat, especially skills in handling incidents during our forest exploration journey, is essential to ensure a safe trip.”
According to Mr. Cil Bruis, one of the skills that city dwellers need to acquire before a forest adventure trip is the ability to handle getting lost in the forest. Mr. Krajan Ha Tang, a resident of Dam Rong 4 commune with extensive forest experience, emphasized: "Because they are unfamiliar with the forest terrain, the hypothetical situation above is very important to consider." Mr. Krajan Ha Tang said that some people still say that if someone gets lost in the forest, they can use a whistle to make a sound to attract rescue. However, this method is actually very ineffective. When lost in the forest, the person is already exhausted, and the continuous movement over a long period of time quickly depletes their strength, leaving them without enough energy to blow a whistle for help. Even if they manage to blow a whistle, the sound only travels a few hundred meters, making it difficult for rescuers to hear and respond.
In the unfortunate event of getting lost, the most effective way to find help is to light a fire. This is also the quickest way. “Fire creates both light and smoke, making it easily recognizable from a distance. The signal range of a fire is very wide, day or night. You can see the fire on the mountaintop from the foot of the mountain. You can also see the fire and smoke from another mountain. Fire easily ignites from dry leaves and branches. Fire also helps maintain body heat for someone lost in the forest at night, when rescuers cannot yet reach them,” said Krajan Ha Tang.
Regarding the use of fire as a distress signal in case of getting lost in the forest, Mr. Nguyen Anh Phong, a tourist from Dong Nai City, added: "The person signaling with fire needs to pay attention to the location of the fire so that it doesn't spread and cause a forest fire." According to Mr. Phong, for safe trekking, it's best for tourists to choose professional trekking tour operators. They have experienced trekking teams and the skills to handle unexpected situations.
