Old-growth forest ecotourism

Việt NamViệt Nam07/12/2023

The Phan Dung to Ta Nang forest trail isn't very long, but it's winding, with many steep hills and deep streams. It seems that since the authorities put up 30 signposts along this trail, trekkers and tour groups have been using it more frequently and safely. They've discovered an old-growth forest that had previously been little-traveled.

Meeting fellow trekker Nguyen Van Thanh (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) at the center of Phan Dung commune, he shared: “Today is the third day of our trek from Ta Nang to Phan Dung. On the way back, we stopped to rest at Phum Dam and visited the magnificent primeval forest. From afar, everyone could hear the sound of the stream gurgling over the rocky steps.”

"This area is quite cool, with many precious trees whose trunks are so large two people can't wrap their arms around them, their branches reaching towering heights. Under the canopy of the old forest, many wildflowers bloom. Leaving the forest, on both sides of the Phum stream are corn and rice fields in bloom belonging to the Rac Lay ethnic minority, interspersed with lush fruit orchards...". Leaning on walking sticks, with personal backpacks slung over their shoulders, their feet cautiously made their way across the stream. The whole group was exhausted after the long trek through the forest, but everyone was refreshed and laughing heartily. That's the scene from a trip to the old forest in Phan Dung by a group of young people from Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Mang Nong, an elderly farmer in Phan Dung commune, over 70 years old, said: “The Phum stream originates from the Phan Dung (Binh Thuan) and Duc Trong (Lam Dong) forests, stretching for tens of kilometers, winding and meandering through the old-growth forest, then merging into the Yaly waterfall – a waterfall cascading from a height of 150m, located in the Ta Hoang mountain gorge, Phan Dung protected forest, before flowing into the Song Long Song irrigation reservoir. Initially, the Phum dam was only intended to retain water for agricultural production for the people in the area near the forest, but since the Phan Dung – Ta Nang tourist route opened, the Phum dam has become well-known and an ideal stop for many travelers. This is because surrounding the Phum dam is a magnificent primeval forest, with many shrubs and wildflowers of various colors, emitting a fragrant aroma thanks to the natural stream water. To retain water for irrigating crops, the local people have long used rocks to block the Phum stream. Therefore, above the dam, the vast expanse of water spreads out.” "The forest is cool..."

In the tranquil old-growth forest, the gentle murmur of the stream blends with the chirping of birds, creating a captivating and soothing melody. Almost every trekker on this route stops at Phum Dam. They not only rest and recuperate but also admire the majestic natural scenery and mountains. Over time, the massive rocks in the stream have been eroded by water, forming rock formations resembling dragons, tiger caves, frog dens, and teeming with countless small fish. Around Phum Dam, the stunning natural landscape resembles a picturesque landscape painting. The Ta Nang - Phan Dung trekking route becomes even more impressive with the presence of Phum Dam, an ideal stop for travelers. The fresh mountain air and the cool, year-round flowing Phum stream, along with the majestic mountain scenery, allow many travelers to immerse themselves in this vibrant natural tapestry. The old-growth forest of Phan Dung, with its enchanting Phum stream, is expected to become an attractive ecotourism destination.
