Phan Dung tourism, the green route

Việt NamViệt Nam14/04/2024

During those historic days of April, we continued our journey back to the old revolutionary base in the Phan Dung mountains. Passing through the landmarks and scenic mountain landscapes gave us a truly wild and natural feeling. The forests that once sheltered our soldiers and protected them from the enemy now have a new look and could become a green route for tourism development.

Leaving the Phan Dung irrigation reservoir, and following the gentle Ta Uong river along the gravel road, we headed towards a place called Phum. Phum, in the Rac Lay ethnic language, means "large field." During the resistance war, this was a place for agricultural production, supplying rice and other food crops to the soldiers. Currently, Phum has many fields belonging to the people of Phan Dung and also some Kinh people from Lien Huong and Phong Phu who come here to cultivate. They mainly grow short-term crops such as beans, corn, rice, and sesame. The soil here is quite fertile with year-round water, so everything is a vibrant green. Although located deep in the mountains, the land here is flat, like a basin surrounded by mountains. The peaceful scenery makes people feel closer to nature.

Leaving Phum, we headed to another place in Phan Dung commune called Tan Le. While Phum was a food production area, Tan Le was the military base of Tuy Phong district in those days. After climbing several steep slopes, we arrived after nearly two hours of walking. Before us was the Tan Le stream winding through large trees. The scenery was quite beautiful, with small waterfalls interspersed with jagged rocks and crystal-clear water. The forest here is beautiful and contains many valuable timber species such as Cam Lien, Ca Chi, Cam Xe, Sao, Go, and Giang Huong... They grow evenly and are of similar size, with diameters ranging from 20 to 30 cm, and the deeper we went, the more large trees appeared. Because it is strictly protected, there are still quite a few wild orchids blooming here.

Leaving Tan Le on the gravel road constructed in 2014, we headed towards Yaly Waterfall located in the Ta Hoang ravine. Although spring was ending, the mountains and forests of Phan Dung still retained their romantic charm with the colors of leaves and flowers. After about 30 minutes, we arrived at a place called Tang Thu. This area boasts fertile, flat land surrounded by undulating mountain ranges. The natural scenery is stunning, a blend of majestic mountains and a touch of romantic wildflowers. Tang Thu is an ancient land, the home of the Phan Dung people before and during the resistance war. In those days, the Phan Dung people lived concentrated here, extending all the way to Ta Hoang. Beyond Tang Thu, we found ourselves in a beautiful crape myrtle forest. The crape myrtle trees, with their pure white trunks, grew evenly and straight, without any intermingling. At midday, sunlight filtered through the leaves, illuminating the clusters of heart-shaped purple flowers, creating a peaceful and poetic scene. The scenery was truly captivating.

Passing through the crape myrtle forest, we arrived at Ta Hoang base. Besides being a revolutionary base, Ta Hoang is also a rather special area. Here, you will see ancient-style rice paddies and stilt houses peeking out from the mountains. Ta Hoang was formerly the land of the Phan Dung people. After peace was restored, the Party and State persuaded them to move down from the mountains to a flat area that was easier to access and developed their lives. To this day, Ta Hoang remains the soul of the homeland, a place where the people return to remember their ancestors.

Passing through the ancient rice paddies characteristic of the Rắc Lây people, we reached the Tà Hoàng stream. This is the downstream of the Yaly waterfall that we were heading to. From afar, we could hear the roar of the waterfall echoing through the forest. Following the Tà Hoàng stream, which was quite rocky and shaded by ancient trees, we arrived at the waterfall with joy and excitement.

Yaly Waterfall is quite beautiful, cascading down from a height of over 100m, creating a white, frothy spray. At the foot of the waterfall is a lake about 100 m2 in size and over 1m deep, with crystal-clear water that allows you to see the bottom.

It's impossible to compare which waterfall in Binh Thuan is more beautiful because each one has its own unique charm. Some waterfalls are beautiful with the majestic grandeur of the mountains and forests, while others are beautiful with the delicate, wild beauty of the mountainous region. For us, Yaly Waterfall is like a gentle muse in the mountains of Phan Dung. This season, the waterfall has less water, so when the sun is high, the water, filtered through the sunlight, sparkles beautifully, creating a poetic and romantic scene. The sky is blue, the clouds are white, and surrounding the waterfall are forest trees that bloom seasonally, their fragrant blossoms attracting flocks of colorful butterflies. Only by visiting and immersing ourselves in nature here can we fully appreciate the beauty and poetic essence of a mountainous region as emotionally evocative as Yaly Waterfall.

It can be said that visiting the Phan Dung mountain range is like experiencing a natural landscape brimming with emotions. From the pride of the revolutionary base with landmarks like Phum and Tan Le, the ancient land of Tang Thu, or the ancestral homeland of the Phan Dung people, each place offers unique and fascinating feelings.

With trekking tourism becoming a recent trend, the La Bá - Phan Dũng - Tà Năng route will be a lush, green flower-lined path for tourism in Binh Thuan.

Trekking is a long-distance walking activity across challenging terrain to explore wildlife, combined with outdoor tourism, adventure sports, and camping in forests... where infrastructure or essential needs are limited. Therefore, exploring the Phan Dung mountain range will be an exciting and adventurous experience, yet also full of poetic charm.
