Educational-research experiential tourism is an emerging type of tourism , based on exploiting the advantages of history, culture, natural resources, local customs and practices; targeting tourists who love to explore, experience, and do in-depth research such as students, researchers, etc.

In Jining City, Shandong Province, China, home to a system of famous historical and cultural relics such as the Holy Land of Nishan, San Kong, and Water Margin, educational and research tourism has become a key industry. In just the first 6 months of 2023, 800,000 visitors came to experience studying and researching in Qufu-Jining, surpassing the number of visitors in the same period in 2019, before the Covid-19 outbreak.

To promote local advantages for tourism, Jining city has promoted the transformation and creative development of traditional culture, exploited inherent potentials, and formed new driving forces through the combination of cultural and tourism resources.

Educational experiential tourism has received widespread participation from the whole society, especially tourist areas, hotels, and local travel agencies, thereby forming a chain of industries including a system of destinations, experiential tourism facilities, thematic research camps, educational experiential tourism classes, etc.

The rich experiential tourism products have attracted a large number of visitors. Notably, in addition to familiar destinations, the locality has also built a series of new cultural works serving experiential tourism, learning and research such as Ni Son Holy Land, Confucius Museum, Confucius Institute... and at the same time introduced experiential tourism routes with attractive itineraries.

Statistics show that Jining city alone has designed 4 major thematic tourist routes, 10 high-quality tourist routes, 647 courses and 220,000 research hours to serve tourists to experience, learn and research local history and culture.

According to assessments, this new form of tourism is well received by society, because it not only meets the needs of tourists to explore and experience, but also contributes to improving understanding, emotional attachment, and forming the right attitude towards traditional history, culture and the natural environment.

Statistics from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China show that in the first half of 2023, there were a total of 2.384 billion domestic tourist trips, an increase of 63.9%; domestic tourism revenue reached 2.3 trillion yuan, an increase of 95.9% over the same period last year. Of which, cultural, educational, and research experience tourism is one of the popular types, attracting a large number of tourists.
