Springtime visit to the museum.

During the recent Lunar New Year holiday in Da Nang, many families, especially young people, chose museums as their first destination of the year. They hoped to gain a deeper understanding of the region's history and culture, and enjoy a meaningful and unique spring season, instead of just engaging in recreational activities.

This reflects a growing trend among both locals and tourists to rediscover traditional values and roots, as well as a need to experience cultural and artistic spaces with depth.

A beautiful way of life in springtime.

Ten days before Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), Ms. Lam Thanh Quynh Thu (Hai Chau ward) welcomed her children and grandchildren from all over to her home to celebrate Tet. The younger generation in her extended family made a promise to gather at a different location each year to experience the diverse aspects of Vietnamese Tet. And this year, their spring reunion destination was Da Nang city.

Early on the first morning of the new year, Thư's family members climbed Sơn Trà mountain together, visiting Linh Ứng Pagoda and Đồng Đình Museum. Amidst the refreshing green forest, at the museum, the story of spring was depicted gently and peacefully with traditional costumes, old houses, and fragrant tea. Young people had the opportunity to slow down, feel the flavor of Tet from simple, familiar things connected with nature and the beauty of traditional culture.

While researching local entertainment and cultural activities during this time, Ms. Thu noticed that museums showcase many meaningful and unique events throughout the Lunar New Year period. She suggested that her children and grandchildren plan a museum tour for the spring season.

“In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), the ‘Spring Procession’ market at the Da Nang Museum (31 Tran Phu Street) opens up a special cultural space where traditional Tet customs are preserved, recreated, and spread. Here, children excitedly experience pottery making, clay figurine making, betel nut preparation, and participate in the traditional bamboo pole dance of the Co Tu ethnic group… The market not only evokes Tet memories in the hearts of adults but also opens a door for the younger generation to touch, feel, and continue the cultural heritage of the nation,” Ms. Thu shared.

Christopher Johnson (from Son Tra ward), an English teacher who has lived and celebrated Tet in Da Nang for over 5 years, always maintains the habit of seeking out art spaces during the first days of the new year. On the morning of the second day of Tet this year, he spent his time at the Da Nang Museum of Fine Arts (78 Le Duan Street), enjoying the exhibition "Horses and Flowers in the Works of Le Ba Dang".

“Horses symbolize strength and aspiration, while flowers embody the vibrant beauty of life. These two parallel symbols have created an artistic world that is both powerful and free-spirited, yet subtle and serene. Standing before works with abstract lines and ever-changing shapes that evoke freedom and depth of soul, I feel a gentle yet profound awakening. For me, art is the most beautiful way to recharge my spirit, welcoming the new year with bright, vibrant, and inspiring colors,” said Christopher Johnson.

Enriching the picture of Tet

According to the Da Nang Museum, before and during the Lunar New Year of the Horse, the museum organized a variety of festive activities, attracting the participation and enthusiasm of a large number of people and tourists, especially families and young people. The demand for cultural and experiential activities at the museum during Tet increased in both quantity and quality.

From February 16th to 19th (corresponding to the 29th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Snake to the 3rd day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Horse), the Da Nang Museum welcomed and served nearly 2,500 visitors, including over 1,000 international tourists. In addition, other museums in the city, such as the Cham Sculpture Museum and the thematic museum complex in Hoi An, also remained open throughout the Tet holiday, attracting a large number of visitors.

According to Mr. Huynh Dinh Quoc Thien, Director of the Da Nang Museum, after merging and operating at three locations, the museum has proactively and strongly innovated both in content and organizational form, aiming to diversify experiences and harmoniously combine tradition and modernity. Maintaining continuous operation during Tet with unique cultural spaces and incorporating creative educational elements is a way to bring the museum closer to community life, suitable for many target groups, especially families with young children.

In addition, the museum offers free admission on the first day of the Lunar New Year and creates creative photo-taking spaces to attract young people. This is a flexible approach, in line with the trend of cultural experiences linked to the need for sharing on social media.

“People and tourists not only come to visit, but also want to interact and become part of the cultural story. This shows that people are increasingly interested in rediscovering their roots and traditions, especially during the spring season. Therefore, museums in the city are gradually becoming dynamic and creative cultural institutions – meaningful destinations connecting the past with the present, nurturing beautiful lifestyles, and contributing to enhancing the cultural and spiritual life of the community every time Tet (Lunar New Year) comes around,” Mr. Thien observed.
