Officials from the Ethnic Affairs Department of Tuan Giao district are guiding local people on techniques for planting and caring for macadamia trees.

Macadamia nuts are considered a suitable crop for the district, capable of helping people alleviate poverty and move towards prosperity. Therefore, the district has identified the development of macadamia nut cultivation as a major policy and a top priority for the entire political system.

Mr. Lo Van Cuong, Secretary of the Tuan Giao District Party Committee

Following the directives of the District Party Committee, the Tuần Giáo District government has actively promoted and encouraged people to convert areas of low-yield crops to macadamia cultivation. The district has focused on organizing training courses to guide people on techniques for digging holes, planting, and caring for macadamia trees. In addition, implementing national target programs for socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, and sustainable poverty reduction programs, the district has provided support in the form of seedlings and fertilizers to help people expand their macadamia cultivation area.

In Pú Xi 1 village, Quài Tở commune, thanks to the dedicated guidance of commune and district officials, by the end of 2023, Mr. Hờ A Lử's family, one of 172 households, had completed planting new macadamia trees; 100% of the family's macadamia trees survived with a survival rate of over 90%. According to Mr. Hờ A Lử, after receiving enthusiastic guidance from officials, he and many other families registered and received macadamia seedlings to plant. This year, Mr. Lử's family registered to plant an additional 1.5 hectares of macadamia trees to develop their economy.

With the involvement of all levels of government and the consensus of the people, the area planted with macadamia trees in Tuan Giao district has expanded significantly in recent years. In 2022, the district planted 150 hectares of new macadamia trees; by 2023, it had planted nearly 1,700 hectares with 2,800 households participating. Currently, the macadamia trees throughout the district are growing and developing well, with a survival rate of over 90%.

Tuan Giao District aims to have over 8,000 hectares of macadamia trees by the end of 2025, with an average of 100 macadamia trees per household, creating jobs for tens of thousands of workers and providing stable income for the people. In 2024, Tuan Giao District successfully encouraged 5,500 households to register for macadamia cultivation, bringing the total number of households participating in macadamia farming in the district to nearly 8,000, accounting for almost 50% of the agricultural population in the area.

The district aims to complete the planting of 3,300 hectares of macadamia trees by the end of June 2024, ensuring proper techniques and timing. After the 2024 planting season, the macadamia area in the district will increase to over 6,000 hectares, making Tuan Giao a locality with a large macadamia acreage in the country. This will create a significant transformation in agricultural restructuring, providing a direction for poverty reduction and sustainable wealth creation for the people in the district.

According to Mr. Lo Van Cuong, Secretary of the Tuan Giao District Party Committee: Macadamia trees are hundreds of years old, serving both to green barren land and hills, and to bring high economic value to growers due to high market demand. Income from macadamia trees can reach 120-130 million VND/hectare/year, many times higher than growing corn or cassava. Macadamia is considered a suitable crop for the district, capable of helping people alleviate poverty and move towards prosperity. Therefore, the district has identified the development of macadamia tree cultivation as a major policy and a top priority for the entire political system from the district to the grassroots level.

With the existing macadamia plantations and the concerted efforts and determination of the entire political system, Tuan Giao district will effectively develop and expand macadamia cultivation, making it a key crop in economic development and poverty reduction for the people.

To secure a market for its produce, Tuan Giao district signed a memorandum of understanding with TH Group. Accordingly, the district committed to creating all necessary conditions for TH Group and its member units to implement the macadamia nut planting project in the area. In return, TH Group committed to purchasing all macadamia nuts from Tuan Giao district for 50 years. Furthermore, Tuan Giao district invited experts to guide the development of planting area data so that when the macadamia trees reach the canopy stage and reforest the barren hills, they will simultaneously be eligible for forest environmental services and participate in the carbon credit market.
