MEANINGFUL LESSONS FROM TET (LUNAR NEW YEAR)

From Monday morning flag-raising ceremonies to lessons and STEM education activities, students at Dinh Tien Hoang Primary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) have felt the atmosphere of the upcoming Lunar New Year 2024.

At the weekly assembly on January 22nd, the students participated in an activity called "Learning about Tet (Vietnamese New Year)". Throughout this week, students had many other activities such as: "Making masks for the spring festival", "Mbot for the spring festival" (Mbot is an intelligent robot developed according to the STEM education model); a competition to decorate apricot and peach blossoms; a day of making banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes); a competition to create video clips "Street Corners on Tet"…

Starting the week before, students participated in STEM lessons with a Vietnamese Tet (Lunar New Year) atmosphere, such as learning how to wrap a model banh tet (traditional Vietnamese rice cake) from paper and decorating Tet-themed paintings. The school also organized the 2024 Spring Festival, with the participation of many students and parents.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Huong, the school principal, said that building educational activities in the school around the theme of Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) helps students enthusiastically participate. From this, many lessons about the meaning of the traditional Tet holiday, the origins of the nation, and the beautiful aspects of Vietnamese culture are presented in a relatable and authentic way. At the same time, it is also an opportunity to connect parents with educational activities at the school.

TEACH CHILDREN TO SHARE

From January 22nd to February 1st, the "Spring Festival" at Phu My Kindergarten (District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) was a resounding success. During the festival, teachers and children prepared materials and created many vibrant works of art, such as the preschool class decorating piggy banks, the kindergarten class decorating plant pots, and the older children painting on cloth bags.

The highlight of the festival is that the artworks will be auctioned off to raise funds to help those in need. Ms. Pham Bao Hanh, the school principal, said that the "Spring Festival" also features food stalls and folk activities for parents to participate in with their children at the school.

"The program has received enthusiastic support from parents because it helps children be creative while also contributing to educating them about the spirit of sharing," Ms. Hanh said.

SPRING OF LOVE, TET OF FAMILY REUNION

Students at Nguyen Huu Tho High School (District 4, Ho Chi Minh City) are excitedly participating in numerous competitions and activities celebrating Tet (Lunar New Year) throughout the period leading up to February 2nd. A prime example is the writing competition "My Feelings about Tet," where students can showcase their literary skills and creativity through written words, images, and accompanying videos. Each entry reflects their emotions about past Tet memories, present Tet aspirations, nostalgia for traditional Tet dishes, or cherished memories of family reunions during Tet.

Tenth-grade students also participated in a "New Year's Greeting Card" design competition; eleventh-grade students competed in "Decorating Tet Fruit Trays"; and students from all three grades competed in decorating apricot and peach blossoms, and a traditional Vietnamese dress (áo dài) fashion show with the theme "Gentle Spring Colors" to honor the traditional Vietnamese áo dài. Notably, on January 30th, Nguyen Huu Tho High School also organized the "Spring of Love - Tet Reunion" program, giving Tet gifts to disadvantaged students.

Mr. Do Dinh Dao, the school principal, said that the Tet holiday activities aim to create a spring-themed atmosphere for students to have fun and relax after a stressful period of studying. These activities also serve as lively and practical lessons to educate students about Vietnamese culture; give them opportunities to connect, interact, and work in teams; and instill a spirit of solidarity, love, and sharing with disadvantaged friends in future generations of students…

Incorporating Tet (Lunar New Year) lessons into preschool children's learning.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan Trang, a specialist in the Preschool Education Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that the period before the Lunar New Year is a meaningful time. Teachers teach children not only Vietnamese traditions and customs but also much knowledge and lessons about nutrition and health. For example, preschool children can talk about the activities their families usually do during Tet, and which activity they like best…

At the same time, the teacher asks the children to name the dishes eaten during Tet (Vietnamese New Year), their favorite dishes, and asks them which dishes should not be eaten in excess (such as cakes, jams, candies, etc.).

At the same time, teachers can involve children in activities, simulate situations, and talk to them about how to stay healthy during Tet, such as not staying up too late or sleeping in too late the next day. They should also emphasize the importance of safety when going out to celebrate Tet, recognizing signs of illness, and not self-medicating if sick.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan Trang, all of these lessons and messages should be presented gently and approachably, making them easy for children to understand. They can be integrated into school holidays, morning conversations, classroom activities, and end-of-day conversations while children wait for their parents to pick them up.
