Hang Pagoda is located at the foot of Thoi Loi volcano (Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province) - a volcano that has been "dormant" on Ly Son island for millions of years.
Hang Pagoda, also known as Thien Khong Thach Tu, originated as a Champa temple. Later, when the Vietnamese settled Ly Son in the early 17th century, the pagoda became a place of asceticism and subsequently a Buddhist temple.

Hang Pagoda is 24m deep, 20m wide, and 3.2m high, covering an area of 480m2. Inside the pagoda are many altars made of Cham stone pedestals, used to worship Buddha, Quan Thanh, the Twelve Yama Kings, and the ancestors of the Tran family who contributed to the establishment of Hang Pagoda, along with 7 village elders of An Hai.
Hang Pagoda is located in a million-year-old cave in Ly Son.
What makes Hang Pagoda unique compared to many other pagodas is that it has no monks at all; only the local people and Buddhist followers on the island take turns offering incense and maintaining the pagoda.
Hang Pagoda is a typical scenic spot in Ly Son. In 1994, it was recognized as a national scenic spot.

Entrance to Hang Pagoda
Every year, Hang Pagoda is the place to hold major ceremonies such as Lunar New Year, Vu Lan, Buddha's Birthday and the death anniversaries of ancestors, attracting a large number of people to come and worship.
Because of the unique features of the temple, tourists visiting Ly Son Island always stop by to visit, worship, and enjoy the scenery.
Along with other attractions such as To Vo Gate, Cau Cave, Thoi Loi Peak, Duc Pagoda..., Hang Pagoda is contributing to the promotion of tourism in Ly Son.
