Looking out over the Dubai skyline, many will admire the work of Yahya Jan. He is the chairman and design director of architecture and engineering firm NORR, the firm behind some of the most iconic landmarks in the world, including Atlantis and Shangri-La Hotels.
He is now working on one of his most ambitious ideas. The Ciel Dubai Marina, commonly known as the Ciel Tower, will be the world's tallest hotel when it is completed in late 2024. It will have more than 1,000 rooms spread over 82 floors and will stand at a height of about 365 meters.
Named after the French word for sky, Ciel Tower is intended to be timeless, like the Empire State Building or the Chrysler Building in New York City.
Mr. Jan, 61, was tasked with designing the skyscraper on a triangular plot of land measuring just 2,500 square meters, which is considered quite small for a building of such height.
According to developer The First Group, the glass observation deck will offer 360-degree views of the city, as well as the coastline and iconic Dubai landmarks such as the artificial island Palm Jumeirah. Guests will also be able to enjoy the view from the rooftop pool and restaurants.
In addition to being visually stunning, the project is also energy efficient, with 25% less electricity needed for air conditioning than similar buildings, Mr. Jan said.
“It’s not just about architecture. It’s about architecture and engineering. That’s why I love this project so much. It’s… my passion, it’s the convergence of science and art,” he said.
When Mr. Jan first came to Dubai in 1996, he never envisioned himself leaving behind a legacy that combines offices, residential apartments and Dubai's iconic shopping mall.
