Aloe vera is widely exploited in the beauty industry. Many natural cosmetic brands use aloe vera to produce skin care products.
Not only does aloe vera nourish the skin, it is also extremely effective in healing sunburns. When applied, the damaged skin is immediately soothed. Thanks to that, it is also called the “burn-healing plant”.
Aloe vera has the ability to quickly reduce the pain and redness of sunburned skin.
The effect of aloe vera on sunburned skin
Several studies have found that the clear gel inside aloe vera leaves can help heal mild to moderate sunburns. Aloe vera works to relieve sunburns in the following ways:
- Reduce inflammation: Some compounds in aloe vera gel such as Anthraquinones and salicylic acid have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and redness-reducing effects.
- Stimulates collagen production: Sunburns will heal quickly as the aloe vera gel stimulates collagen production.
- Nourishes skin thanks to its rich vitamin content: Aloe vera contains vitamins A, C, and E, which are antioxidants that can reduce the harmful effects of sunlight on the skin.
The clear gel of aloe vera leaves has many beauty and healing uses.
How to use aloe vera to reduce sunburn
- Apply aloe vera directly
The simplest way is to remove the green outer leaves to get the gel inside and apply it directly to the damaged skin area several times a day. After just a few applications, your sunburned skin will feel much better and will no longer be painful.
- Use commercially available aloe vera gel
If you don’t have fresh aloe vera at home, you can find a product containing 100% aloe vera gel that is widely available in pharmacies or cosmetic stores. Then apply this product directly to the skin area that needs healing.
When using fresh aloe vera leaves, clean the green outer skin.
- Aloe vera bath
You can add a few spoons of aloe vera gel to your bath and soak in it for at least 20 minutes. This will soothe the burning sensation and reduce the itching caused by sunburn.
While aloe vera is great for speeding up the healing process of sunburns, you still need to protect your skin from UV rays. Apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and cover up carefully whenever you go outside.
