Beneath the Milky Way, I am a dreamer.

"Under the Milky Way, we are merely dreamers..." - photographers reveal they are willing to stay up all night, pouring in time and money to capture stunning, fairytale-like images that evoke the feeling of "our lives are truly humble under the stars."

From the "cloud-hunting paradise" of Ta Xua (Son La province) to Ke Ga Cape (Lam Dong province), from Tri An Lake (Dong Nai city) to Con Dao ( Ho Chi Minh City)... all are ideal locations for astronomical photographers in Vietnam to capture perfect images of the Milky Way thanks to their vast spaces and minimal light pollution.

“The Milky Way has always fascinated me,” said Anh Tú, 41, who runs the “Where to Go in Con Dao” page. Tú says Con Dao is a fantastic destination for viewing the Milky Way or the Rho Ophiuchi cloud formation (next to the constellations Scorpio and Ophiuchus), prompting him to frequently take photos there. “But to capture a sharp image of the Milky Way, you need to go on moonless nights or when the sky is dark enough, aiming towards the southeast, between February and October each year. Depending on the month, you should wait between 10 PM and 4 AM to take pictures. Specifically, around the end of May, I often take my camera to beaches in Con Dao such as Lo Voi Beach, Bai Nhat Beach, and Mui Chan Chim from 10:30 PM onwards to take photos. Even so, every photographer has to accept the element of luck – cloudy or rainy weather is a risk.”

Mr. Anh Tú revealed his experience in photographing the Milky Way using two methods: a single shot with a long exposure of 15-30 seconds, depending on the lens focal length and the actual situation regarding light pollution and the impact of artificial light sources (e.g., lights on fishing boats, town lights, beach spotlights...).

Secondly, take multiple shots and then use post-processing software like PixInsight to stack the people, foreground, and Milky Way to highlight details, create a rich image with striking depth and dimensionality. You can also use color filters attached directly to the camera to create the effect. A satisfactory Milky Way photo can require 2-4 hours of post-processing, so "even a hobby requires a lot of effort!"

Photographing the Milky Way fascinates photographers because it constantly requires honing their skills (both shooting techniques and post-processing), and diligently searching for new angles and unusual locations. In return, Mr. Tú affirms: "Gazing at the Milky Way makes you appreciate even more the finiteness of life amidst the vast starry sky."

Couple Hoang Duy and Huong Giang admire the Milky Way in the mountainous region of Dai Tu ( Thai Nguyen ).

The couple, both in their 30s, Hoang Duy (programmer) and Nguyen Huong Giang (editor of the "Stars" section of the online newspaper VNExpress), are both passionate about photography and enjoy camping and photographing the Milky Way.

“Over two years ago, I saw pictures of the Milky Way online and went camping on the ‘dinosaur spine’ of Ta Xua. Seeing the Milky Way sparkling among countless stars for the first time was an unforgettable experience. This was the inspiration for me to embark on the path of astronomical photography, and I became addicted to it without even realizing it. Each trip is both a way to capture the beauty of the night sky and a very effective stress reliever,” shared Mr. Hoang Duy.

With the support and companionship of his wife, Huong Giang, on his camping trips to photograph astronomy, photographer Hoang Duy happily says that this is a valuable source of encouragement for him because "astronomical photography is very hard work." Hoang Duy confided: "To take a beautiful photo, photographers often have to go to very remote and secluded locations to avoid light pollution, along with the dangers and risks of traveling at night. I am truly fortunate to have my wife by my side, which makes me feel much more at ease. Besides our marital affection, we both share a common interest in 'reconnecting with pristine nature.' She's not only my emotional support, but she also takes care of our accommodation, transportation, and even... models for the photos. There are days when driving hundreds of kilometers is exhausting, but when night falls and we look up at the starry sky, all the fatigue naturally disappears."

The astronomical photograph that photographer Hoang Duy has taken that he considers "the most satisfying and valuable" to date is "A Midsummer Night's Dream," taken in Hoa Binh (now Phu Tho province), which won the Gold Award for astronomical photography in 2025 organized by the Vietnam Astronomical and Space Association: "While I was busy setting up my tripod, I looked up and saw Huong Giang standing and gazing at the stars, with a beautiful flower field below, and in the distance, the Milky Way rising near the horizon. The scene was like something out of a fairy tale. I decided to capture the moment instead of my original plan. The photograph expresses what I have always pursued when photographing astronomy: the connection between humanity, nature, and the universe."

The Milky Way, often referred to as "humanity's great home," is a giant disk galaxy with a diameter of approximately 100-120 thousand light-years, containing 100-400 billion stars, including the solar system and Earth, located on the outer edge of a spiral arm called the Orion-Cygnus, about 26,000 light-years from the galactic center.
