Leg severed by lawn mower

Recently, 108 Military Central Hospital received a female patient who had a work accident and had her lower leg severed by a lawn mower.

Patient VTH (41 years old), from Vi Xuyen, Tuyen Quang (formerly Ha Giang province), had his right lower leg severed by a flying blade from a lawnmower while working in the fields. Fortunately, a fellow worker applied a tourniquet and transported him to Ha Giang General Hospital. Simultaneously, the severed leg was preserved in cold storage and transported along with the patient to Military Central Hospital 108 after 9 hours.

Although the patient was admitted to the hospital late compared to the requirements for limb reattachment, thanks to the efforts of the staff at Military Central Hospital 108, the patient's lower leg was successfully reattached. Currently, one week after the surgery, the patient is healthy and able to move their toes.

Dr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, from the Department of Upper Limb Trauma and Microsurgery at Military Central Hospital 108, shared that the surgical team carefully considered the options before proceeding with the reattachment because the patient arrived late. Besides the low success rate, the risk of post-implantation toxicity was very high, potentially even life-threatening.

At the hospital, the patient underwent surgery to reattach the lower leg as quickly as possible, and the operation was a complete success.

According to Dr. Vinh, in cases of limb amputation, patients need proper first aid, correct preservation of the limb (basic washing, wrapping in a clean towel, sealing in a plastic bag and placing in an ice pack, avoiding direct contact with ice), and prompt transfer to hospitals capable of reattachment.

Until now, our country has largely been an agricultural economy . Today, with the development of science and technology, farmers have less hardship thanks to the application of machinery in production.

However, most of the machines they use are self-purchased, self-taught, or learned from one another, without proper instruction on usage and maintenance procedures. Recent accidents involving lawnmowers have sounded an alarm for people using this type of machine.
