Life in the scorching heat

The prolonged heatwave over the past few days is significantly impacting the lives and daily activities of people in many localities throughout the province. From early morning, temperatures have risen sharply, making the outdoor air hot and stuffy. In particular, outdoor workers are facing numerous difficulties and hardships under the intense summer sun.

Around noon, while many people were seeking refuge from the heat, at the J&T express delivery post office in Cam Duong ward, shippers were still busy preparing the last orders to deliver to customers. Under the scorching sun beating down on the road, the delivery staff quickly loaded the goods onto their vehicles and moved to various streets.

From early morning, the temperature rose sharply, making the outdoor air hot and stuffy.

Dressed in a sun-protective jacket that completely covered her face, her face drenched in sweat after hours of driving outdoors, Ms. Ly Thi Thu quickly removed her mask and took a quick drink of water during a short break.

She said that the hot weather makes delivery work much more difficult. Every day, she delivers over 100 orders and proactively adjusts her working hours to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

"I start delivering orders earlier in the morning, and when the sun gets too hot at noon, I take a break before continuing my work. Even though I'm fully equipped with a hat, sun-protective clothing, a mask, and other protective gear, traveling outdoors in this sweltering weather still makes me and many other delivery drivers very tired. The hot weather makes my body very thirsty, so I always have to carry a water bottle with me," said Ms. Thu.

Besides facing the scorching heat, delivery drivers also have to race against time to ensure timely deliveries. Despite the hard work and pressure, they persevere on the roads every day for the sake of income and responsibility.

It's not just delivery drivers who are affected; the intense heat also impacts the livelihoods of many freelance outdoor workers. From construction workers to street vendors, everyone has to struggle to work in the sweltering weather. Under the scorching sun, each step of their work becomes more arduous, yet the work cannot stop because behind it all lies the burden of making a living every day.

The prolonged hot weather has also caused many people to experience serious health problems. At the Respiratory Center of the Provincial General Hospital No. 2, over the past two weeks, many patients have been admitted due to heatstroke, exhaustion, and respiratory illnesses.

The majority of patients are outdoor workers and elderly people with weakened immune systems. Many cases are admitted with symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and dehydration.

The health of elderly people is affected by hot weather.

According to Ms. Le Thi Lien, Head Nurse of the Respiratory Center at Provincial General Hospital No. 2, when receiving cases of heatstroke, doctors and nurses will conduct necessary tests to assess the patient's condition and then determine the appropriate course of treatment.

"We will provide rehydration and electrolyte replacement for the patients, and advise them on measures to prevent heatstroke from recurring," Ms. Lien shared.

According to reporters, the Respiratory Center at Provincial General Hospital No. 2 is currently receiving many patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The prolonged hot weather has a significant impact on those with COPD, as this group of patients is particularly sensitive to weather changes, especially when temperatures remain high for several consecutive days.

Many patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) require treatment.

High temperatures and humid air can irritate the airways of patients, increasing shortness of breath, coughing up phlegm, and fatigue. Simultaneously, these are risk factors that can exacerbate exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), leading to hospitalization. During prolonged hot weather, COPD patients are advised by doctors to limit outdoor activities, avoid exposure to hot environments, maintain prescribed medication, and closely monitor for any unusual symptoms to promptly address and prevent dangerous complications.

Hot weather increases the risk of heatstroke, especially for the elderly, young children, and those who work hard outdoors such as delivery drivers, factory workers, or construction laborers. These groups are particularly vulnerable to health problems due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

Doctors advise people to limit going outside between 10 AM and 4 PM, and to wear sun-protective clothing, face masks, and ensure adequate hydration and electrolyte balance. If symptoms such as headache, dizziness, flushed face, or signs of heatstroke appear, people should quickly move the patient to a cool, well-ventilated area to lower their body temperature and go to the nearest medical facility for prompt treatment.
