The European Central Bank (ECB) announced it is convening major European financial institutions for an emergency meeting on May 26th to address Claude Mythos – the latest artificial intelligence (AI) model from technology company Anthropic.
This model is considered to possess sufficient power to "crack" even the most advanced information technology security standards currently in place.
According to sources, the ECB is pressuring European banks to quickly find defensive solutions. The central bank is also requiring US financial institutions, which have earlier access to technology, to share cybersecurity intelligence with Europe.
Previously, Anthropic had granted limited access to the Mythos model to a number of large US organizations as part of a secret pilot project called "Project Glasswing".
Frank Elderson, Vice President of the ECB's Banking Supervisory Board, stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that cybercriminals are accelerating their attacks with AI-powered technology by the minute.
He warned: "If a software vendor releases a patch, hackers can use reverse engineering to find and exploit that vulnerability in just 30 minutes, not weeks."
In this context, the ECB is requiring banks to radically change their internal processes, ensuring that their defense systems are updated faster than current market practices.
