At 81 years old, with over 60 years on stage, Elvis Phương no longer has to chase quantity or market pressure. His return this time is purely a contemplative stroll for someone who has experienced almost all the ups and downs of life. His final song (set to music by composer Lăng Lập from a poem by Hải Âu) is a melancholic love song, but through the renowned singer's interpretation, it avoids despair and instead evokes nostalgia for memories and encounters, as he himself recounts: "Perhaps there won't be a next time."
Composer Lăng Lập shared that upon receiving the poem by author Hải Âu, he found a connection and completed the music within just a few days. "Reading the poem gave me the music immediately," the composer stated. He also affirmed that from the moment the first notes sounded, the only person he thought of was Elvis Phương. The song doesn't require soaring high notes or intricate techniques, but rather a voice mature enough and experienced to "tell" rather than "sing."
And with his characteristic deep, warm voice, Elvis Phương perfectly conveyed that spirit. He chose a slow, deliberate singing style, enunciating words naturally as if he were whispering an old story, filled with memories, forgotten moments, and the lingering anguish of the possibility of "one day returning and never seeing each other again."
Born in 1945, Elvis Phuong is one of the icons of Vietnamese modern music. For many years, although he no longer has a packed touring schedule, he has persistently recorded and performed whenever his health permits. His perseverance in his later years is something that many younger generations admire.
The final poem was officially released on digital platforms on the evening of May 25th. The song continues the musical thread of memories and reflections that Elvis Phương has pursued in recent years, as a tribute to the many generations of audiences who have accompanied his singing throughout the years.
