The EU is rushing to pave the way for a trade deal with the US.

On May 27, European Union (EU) member states officially approved a compromise between the European Parliament (EP) and the EU Council to expedite the completion of the legal procedures for a trade agreement with the United States before the July 4 deadline.

EU lawmakers are expected to formally approve the document at a meeting in mid-June in Strasbourg, France, before submitting it to the EU Council for ratification.

According to the EP, the agreement strengthens some aspects of the original proposal aimed at reducing instability in transatlantic trade and better protecting EU industry, agriculture , and small and medium-sized enterprises. The main regulation concerning the import of industrial goods and agricultural/food products will have an expiration clause and will terminate on December 31, 2029.

Furthermore, the European Commission has the right to suspend tariff preferences for the US if Washington fails to address EU concerns regarding the imposition of tariffs on the bloc's exports. In addition, the EP and the EU Council have agreed to establish a safeguard mechanism in cases where Washington makes decisions unfavorable to the bloc.

The EU and the US reached a trade agreement in July 2025. However, the ratification process in the EU has dragged on for months amid strained transatlantic relations.
