The EU sets conditions for implementing preferential tariffs with the US.

European Union (EU) lawmakers took a significant step toward implementing a trade agreement with the United States on March 19.

Specifically, AFP reported that the European Parliament's Trade Committee voted in favor of EU tariff reductions on certain goods imported from the US under the US-EU trade agreement to be reached in July 2025. However, EU lawmakers stressed that these incentives would come with additional safeguards.

Anna Cavazzini, a Green Party MEP in the European Parliament, noted that the aforementioned tariff reductions would only take effect once the US resolves the tariff irregularities following the US Supreme Court ruling in February. Last year's US-EU agreement stipulated a 15% tariff on most EU goods exported to the US. However, the Supreme Court rejected most of the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Trump responded by imposing new tariffs, creating numerous legal complications for the trade agreement with Europe.

The terms approved by the Trade Committee on March 19 will be submitted to the full European Parliament for a vote by its 720 members, and further detailed negotiations with EU member states are required. Ms. Cavazzini stated that the EU could cancel tax incentives if President Trump imposes new tariffs or "threatens EU national security," as in the case of Trump's attempt to control Greenland, a Danish EU member. US Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder welcomed the EU Trade Committee's move and urged the bloc to implement the tax agreement promptly.
