Trade ministers from European Union (EU) member states met in Brussels on November 24th and held discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during the EU's first visit to Brussels. The focus of the discussions was the future of EU-US trade relations and the EU's shared approach to China.
According to ministers from European Union member states, economic relations with the US remain a "strategic pillar" for the EU, but need to be adjusted to address disagreements over industrial subsidies and new US protectionist measures. The focus is on the US Inflation Reduction Act, which is putting pressure on Europe's green manufacturing sectors. In addition, the US and Europe need to find a balance, avoiding the risk of unfair competition in the clean energy sector.
Regarding relations with China, the meeting discussed ways to reduce dependence on supply chains, especially in the semiconductor, battery, and rare materials sectors. However, the ministers affirmed that the EU is not pursuing a policy of decoupling from China, but rather aims to "reduce risks," maintain trade, and ensure economic security.
The EU is striving to maintain a balance between the US and China, but reconciling interests with these two major partners remains a significant challenge, particularly in the areas of green industries and strategic supply chains. To avoid risks, Europe will need to increase its autonomy while maintaining dialogue to avoid being drawn into the global fragmentation cycle.
