The controversial decision occurred in the 45+5 minute, when the “Red Devils” were leading 2-0. Casemiro made a tackle from behind to compete with Andrey Santos. Despite touching the ball first, the Brazilian midfielder still caused the Chelsea player to fall. Referee Bankes immediately showed a second yellow card, causing Casemiro to be sent off.
The 33-year-old midfielder appeared surprised, shaking his head repeatedly before going into the tunnel. On social media, Ferdinand commented: "Casemiro gave the referee the opportunity to show him a card. The decision was a bit harsh, but he allowed him to do so."
Many fans also agreed with Ferdinand's point of view and criticized Casemiro for the confusing red card. "I don't know what he was thinking when he argued like that," one account wrote. Another expressed: "Casemiro threw away the advantage of the whole team, how terrible."
Before leaving the field, Casemiro managed to make his mark with a close-range header to increase the score to 2-0 for MU. He made history by becoming the first player for the “Red Devils” to both score and be sent off in the first half of a Premier League match.
In the second half, MU conceded a goal from Trevor Chalobah's header, but still won 2-1 at Old Trafford.
