FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Unexpected situation in Group A, Group B

The situation of Groups A and B of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup became unpredictable after the second round of matches ended early this morning, June 20.

The second round of matches in Group A of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup ended with the following results: Palmeiras beat Al Ahly 2-0, while Inter Miami defeated Porto 2-1. Thus, Palmeiras and Inter Miami temporarily share the top two positions in Group A with 4 points each, but Palmeiras is ranked higher thanks to a better goal difference.

Porto and Al Ahly are in third and fourth place respectively (with 1 point). All 4 teams in Group A still have the ability to continue but the big advantage is leaning towards Inter Miami and Palmeiras.

In the final match, Inter Miami will face Palmeiras. If the match ends in a draw, the two teams will advance regardless of the result of the remaining match.

According to the FIFA Club World Cup competition rules, if teams are tied on points, the head-to-head record will be used first to determine the rankings. Therefore, even if they lose, Inter Miami and Palmeiras will not be eliminated easily.

Inter Miami will only be eliminated if they lose to Palmeiras, while Al Ahly will only be eliminated if they lose to Inter Miami and Porto will only be eliminated if they win against Al Ahly. The reason is that Inter Miami beat Porto and Palmeiras beat Al Ahly, so they have a big advantage when it comes to head-to-head matches.

In Group B, things became unpredictable when PSG lost to Botafogo. After two matches, Botafogo temporarily led the group with 6 points, PSG ranked 2nd, and Atletico Madrid ranked 3rd (both 3 points). PSG ranked above thanks to a better head-to-head record.

In the final match, Botafogo will face Atletico Madrid, while PSG will face Seattle Sounders FC. Botafogo only needs 1 point against Atletico Madrid to secure a ticket to the next round as the top team. Similarly, PSG only needs to beat Seattle Sounders FC to almost certainly enter the next round.

Another possible scenario is that Atletico Madrid wins against Botafogo, and PSG defeats Seattle Sounders FC. In that case, all three teams, Atletico Madrid, PSG and Botafogo, will have 6 points. The three teams will then face each other to determine who advances. Of these, Atletico Madrid is the team at the biggest disadvantage, having lost 0-4 to PSG.
