Uruguay unveils jersey featuring the four stars from the World Cup 2026 badge. |
The decision was made after Uruguay submitted a formal request to the highest authority in world football. According to regulations, each World Cup victory corresponds to one star on the jersey. Uruguay won in 1930 and 1950, meaning they received two stars.
However, the South American team was allowed to keep two more stars, symbolizing their two Olympic gold medals in 1924 and 1928. Before the World Cup was established in 1930, the Olympic football tournaments were recognized by FIFA as the world championships for national teams. This historical factor allowed Uruguay to be granted special permission to keep four stars on their jerseys.
Uruguay was not only the first World Cup champion in history, but also the host nation of the 1930 tournament. They defeated Argentina in the final at the Centenario Stadium, which is still in use today. Two decades later, Uruguay continued their remarkable feat by beating Brazil away from home to win the 1950 World Cup.
Notably, FIFA isn't always lenient on this issue. Previously, Egypt had requested to have seven stars on their jerseys at the 2018 World Cup, representing their number of CAN titles, but this was rejected because the tournament is not part of the FIFA system.
Meanwhile, Uruguay will continue to wear the four-star emblem at the 2026 World Cup held in North America. The newly unveiled kit retains the traditional sky blue color, paired with a classic white collar.
