The International Football Federation (FIFA) is constantly improving the 2026 World Cup. |
Traditionally, each team was only allowed to register 26 players in their final World Cup squad. However, FIFA wants to increase the number of registered players from 26 to 30 for the 2026 World Cup.
The World Football Federation argues that next summer's tournament will be the biggest World Cup in history, with 48 participating nations. This means that increasing the number of registered players will lead to better match quality, reduced injuries, and more personnel options for coaches.
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11, 2026 to July 19, 2026. Expanding the World Cup to 48 teams means there will be more matches – a total of 104 matches will be held, up from 64 matches in 2022 held in Qatar.
The increase in the number of games from 64 to 104 necessitates adjustments in team management, especially as the games will take place in a variety of locations, under harsh weather conditions such as intense heat and high humidity in North America.
