The International Football Federation (FIFA) is continuously improving the 2026 World Cup. |
According to previous practice, each team is only allowed to register 26 players in the final list for the World Cup. However, FIFA wants to increase the number of registered players from 26 to 30 for the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA argues that next summer’s tournament will be the biggest ever, with 48 nations taking part. This means that increasing the number of players registered will improve the quality of matches, reduce injuries and give coaches more options.
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11, 2026, to July 19, 2026. Expanding the World Cup to 48 teams means there will be more matches - a total of 104 matches will be held, up from 64 in 2022 in Qatar.
The increase in the number of matches from 64 to 104 requires adjustments in force management, especially when matches will take place in different locations, under harsh weather conditions such as heat and high humidity in North America.
