Flappy Bird was released in 2013 by Vietnamese developer Nguyen Ha Dong. Since its launch, the game has quickly become a phenomenon, topping the charts on Google Play and the App Store with over 50 million downloads.

Flappy Bird ’s graphics were reminiscent of Nintendo’s classic Mario games. However, the success was short-lived as Nguyen decided to stop publishing the game in February 2014, despite the game bringing him around $50,000 a day. In a post, Nguyen said the game “ruined my life.”
The Flappy Bird craze continued as people began selling iPhones with the game pre-installed on eBay for thousands of dollars. Other developers quickly copied the game, and a version of Flappy Bird was even released for Fire TV.
However, in 2024, a major turning point occurred when Gametech Holdings acquired ownership of the Flappy Bird trademark, leading to the launch of an unofficial version called "The Flappy Bird Foundation". This version received many negative reactions due to the integration of cryptocurrency into the game. In a message on X, Nguyen affirmed that he was not involved with the game, and said that he did not sell anything and did not support cryptocurrency.

There Will Be No Cryptocurrency in the New Flappy Bird
Last year, it was reported that a "rebirth" of Flappy Bird for Android and iOS would be released in 2025. According to the official website, the new version of the game will feature new characters, challenges, and worlds for players to explore. Players can choose between Classic mode and Quest mode to test their tapping and timing skills, guiding the "dumb bird" through pipes and obstacles. Notably, this version will not involve cryptocurrency.
Version 1.1 of Flappy Bird on the Epic Games Store has a download size of around 129MB and requires Android 6.0 or later. An iOS version is also in development, but no specific release date has been announced. The game's creators said, "We have plans for other platforms but have no further news to share at this time."
