This decision will grant the African Union status equivalent to that of the European Union, instead of its current status as an invited international organization. G20 leaders are expected to announce this decision at their summit, taking place from September 9-10 in New Delhi, India.
Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent letters to G20 leaders proposing that the African Union be granted full permanent membership at the group's upcoming summit. This proposal by Modi is seen as fulfilling India's previous commitment to strengthening Africa's presence and partnerships in global affairs.
