In the first 5 months of 2024, international visitors reached nearly 7.6 million, an increase of 64.9% over the same period last year and an increase of 3.9% over the same period in 2019 - a year before the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to experts, the reason why the number of international visitors in May decreased compared to April is because the peak season for international visitors in Vietnam is usually from October of the previous year to April of the following year. In May, the beginning of summer, the number of international visitors will decrease due to hot weather. In addition, summer is the peak tourist season in European and Northeast Asian markets, so the number of international visitors will disperse to other markets.
According to the General Statistics Office, of the total of nearly 7.6 million international visitors to Vietnam in the past 5 months, visitors by air accounted for 83.7%; by road accounted for 14.2% and by sea accounted for 2.1%. The number of international visitors to Vietnam increased significantly compared to the same period last year thanks to favorable visa policies and tourism promotion programs in 2024 promoted by localities.
Revenue from accommodation and catering services in the past 5 months is estimated at 296.3 trillion VND, up 15.1% over the same period last year. Revenue from tourism is estimated at 24.2 trillion VND, up 45.1%. Revenue from tourism in some localities has increased quite high compared to the same period last year, including Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi , Quang Ninh...
Currently, China has surpassed South Korea to become the largest market sending visitors to Vietnam in May, with more than 357,000 arrivals. South Korea came in second with more than 351,000 arrivals.
The remaining markets in the top 10 include Taiwan (China), Japan, India, the US, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia.
