The road to the border crossing is bumpy.

The roads leading to the Nam Giang international border gate and the Tay Giang sub-border gate are hampered by narrow and dilapidated infrastructure, preventing the effective exploitation of resources for foreign trade and logistics development.

On March 20, 2010, an inter-communal road was opened, extending all the way to the "gateway to heaven" in the communes of Zone 7 of Tay Giang (formerly). From here, transportation for people in the border region bordering Laos (Ka Lum district, Sekong province) has become much easier.

Former Secretary of the Tay Giang District Party Committee (old), Bhriu Liếc, shared that the road to the Vietnam-Laos border has broken the isolation of the localities and, in the near future, will contribute to connecting the East-West key economic region, from Champasak (Laos) to Da Nang and vice versa.

On April 25, 2013, the Tay Giang - Ka Lum secondary border gate was officially opened. Connecting from the Ho Chi Minh Highway to this border gate, the DT606 road, over 69.5km long, has been upgraded and expanded through various projects.

In 2016 and 2020, two road projects connecting the center of A Xan commune to Ch'Ơm commune and the sub-border gate of Tay Giang district (phases 1 and 2) were implemented with a total investment of over 300 billion VND.

These completed projects have gradually improved the transportation infrastructure, ensuring continuous traffic connectivity from Tien Sa Port, Da Nang International Airport, and industrial zones and clusters to the Tay Giang sub-border gate.

To ensure traffic safety and mitigate the consequences of floods, the Department of Construction has allocated resources for regular maintenance and periodic repairs, with a budget of tens of billions of VND.

Overall, however, the DT606 road still has many narrow, winding sections that are frequently damaged and severely degraded. During the rainy season, many locations experience landslides, causing traffic congestion.

According to statistics from relevant authorities, the DT606 route is over 69.5km long but has three road classifications: II, V, and VI. Of these, the II classification, which is an urban road, accounts for just over 2.1km of the section passing through the old Tay Giang town; the VI classification, which is a mountainous section, accounts for as much as 46.35km.

Furthermore, the connecting roads from the center of Da Nang to the secondary border gate, namely National Highway 14G, Ho Chi Minh Highway, and Provincial Road 606, are still narrow and do not allow for the passage of heavy trucks or passenger buses with 30 seats or more.

On the morning of August 14, 2021, the opening ceremony of the Nam Giang - Dak Ta Ooc (Sekong) international border gate was held. Prior to this, on December 22, 2020, the Government issued a resolution upgrading the main border gate to the Nam Giang international border gate.

Since its opening, the Nam Giang international border gate has promoted the development of the border gate system along the entire border between the two countries; opening up new opportunities for cooperation in economics, trade, and tourism between the key economic region of Central Vietnam and the central and southern provinces of Laos, and connecting with the southeastern region of Thailand.

Currently, hundreds of heavy trucks carrying goods from Laos pass through the Nam Giang international border gate every day.

From this point onwards, National Highway 14D, the backbone of the East-West Economic Corridor 2, has deteriorated severely.

With the attention of the Government, on June 4, 2025, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (formerly) approved the investment plan for the project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 14D. The investment objective is to complete the transportation infrastructure, serving the people's travel and goods transportation on National Highway 14D and connecting with Laos through the Nam Giang international border gate.

The total investment for the project is 4,518 billion VND; of which 4,513 billion VND comes from increased revenue and savings in the central government budget.

As the project owner, the representative of the Quang Nam Provincial Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works stated that, at this time, the unit is inviting bids to select a consulting firm to prepare the feasibility study report.

The results will be available within 20 days, at which point the investor will proceed with the next steps in accordance with regulations. Following the direction of the City People's Committee, the investor is making every effort to complete the necessary procedures, aiming to begin construction of this highly urgent project in November 2025.

On October 14, 2023, the Prime Minister approved the Plan for Border Gates on the Vietnam-Laos land border for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, in Quang Nam province (now Da Nang).

According to the plan, the Tay Giang sub-border gate will have its infrastructure and modern technical equipment completed before 2029, and the DT606 road will meet the criteria and standards stipulated for the management of land border gates.

Complete the necessary documents and procedures to request approval from the competent authority for upgrading it to a main border gate…
