On December 30th, the Information Security Department ( Ministry of Information and Communications ) issued a warning regarding a high-tech scam via Messenger using AI face-swapping technology.

Accordingly, recently, on the morning of December 23rd, Ms. NTH (born in 1979; residing at Thép Mới Street, Giang Biên Ward, Long Biên District, Hanoi) received a video call via Messenger from her son, who is studying at a university in Ho Chi Minh City, requesting her to transfer over 100 million VND to pay for study abroad registration fees. As a trained bank employee, Ms. H did not comply with the caller's request.
Regarding this tactic, the Cybersecurity Department stated that initially, the perpetrators collect images and videos by searching for them on the victim's social media accounts or other sources.
Then they create fake videos: Using AI technology to splice faces and voices, they create fake video calls impersonating relatives/friends and then trick people into transferring money.
During the call, the caller gives an urgent reason such as an accident, debt, or need for financial assistance, and requests that money be immediately transferred to an account they provide.
As the year draws to a close, scams like the one described above will continue to become more complex. The Information Security Department ( Ministry of Information and Communications ) advises people to verify the information first when receiving such calls, and to call back a relative directly using a known phone number to check the information.
Don't rush to transfer money as requested during video calls or social media messages. Be cautious when sharing personal information on social media; limit posting personal photos, videos, and sensitive information.
Adjust your privacy settings to restrict strangers from accessing your account. Be wary of unfamiliar accounts or unusual activity. If a relative or friend's account shows signs of being hacked, notify them immediately and avoid interacting with them.
When encountering cases that show signs of fraud, people should promptly report them to the police so that they can be prevented and dealt with according to the law.
