In Ky Thuong commune, the formation of concentrated production forest areas has yielded significant results. During the 2020-2024 period, the area of concentrated planted forests in the commune reached over 5,300 hectares, with an average of over 1,000 hectares planted each year, far exceeding the set target. Of this, over 2,100 hectares of forest have been boldly converted by local people from simple acacia plantations to high-value native tree species such as teak, mahogany, and cinnamon. Notably, the commune has collaborated with businesses to obtain FSC sustainable forest certification for over 6,200 hectares of production forests belonging to more than 630 households.
Mr. Khieu Anh Tu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ky Thuong commune, affirmed: The certification of sustainable forests covering over 6,200 hectares is considered a significant turning point, helping local wood products access demanding markets and ensuring international environmental standards.
While Ky Thuong commune is a prime example of crop restructuring, Ba Che commune (formerly part of Ba Che district) is known as the "capital" of certified forests in Quang Ninh province , with over 16,200 hectares of forest meeting FSC and PEFC standards. Participating households, cooperatives, and businesses in the commune receive 100% support for implementation and assessment costs; support for product output during annual assessments; and assistance in accessing loans from credit institutions for forest planting. Importantly, certified forest areas will have their entire product output guaranteed by the participating entities, ensuring stable prices based on market rates. The price of mature timber of sufficient quality for harvesting is guaranteed to increase by approximately 15-20%, equivalent to 200,000-300,000 VND per ton.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (Ba Che commune) shared: "Since our family's forest area received certification in June 2024, the entire 7 hectares of forest have been covered by a product purchase agreement with a business, giving us peace of mind to care for the forest long-term. Thanks to training to improve awareness and techniques, we now know how to care for acacia trees according to the correct procedures, measuring and evaluating timber volume. With an acacia planting cycle lasting 7 years, our family expects a yield of 160-180 tons/ha, double that of the old planting method."
In addition to expanding the area of certified forests, Quang Ninh province is also focusing on establishing organic non-timber forest product raw material zones, contributing to increasing product value. In Luc Hon commune, with nearly 40 hectares of Sophora japonica forest distributed on gently sloping hills and mountains, along with favorable soil and climate conditions, Sophora japonica has become the main non-timber forest product, bringing high economic value to the local people. To create quality products and gradually establish a raw material zone that meets standards and is assessed and certified as organic, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center (Department of Agriculture and Environment) has built an organic Sophora japonica production model in the commune on a scale of 2.5 hectares. On July 28th, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in coordination with HKB Trading and Service Co., Ltd., organized a training course for 30 households within and outside the model. The households were given an overview of organic agricultural production, guidance on the certification process, appropriate farming techniques, and how to identify factors affecting product quality.
According to statistics, after 5 years of implementing Resolution No. 19-NQ/TU dated November 28, 2019, of the Provincial Party Committee on sustainable forestry development in Quang Ninh province until 2025, with a vision to 2030, the area of sustainably certified forests in Quang Ninh has increased from 15,000 hectares (in 2020) to over 36,300 hectares. This figure not only reflects the efforts of the people and businesses but also shows the effectiveness of the province's mechanisms and policies. Most recently, at the 29th session (regular mid-year session 2025), the Provincial People's Council approved Resolution 59/2025/NQ-HĐND stipulating the level of support for forestry investment with a total budget of over 112 billion VND/year. Notably, the resolution allocates a support level of 400,000 VND/hectare for each sustainable forest management plan that is developed and certified. This provides a platform for forest owners, cooperatives, and businesses to access international markets, especially Europe and North America, markets with stringent requirements for traceability and sustainability. Through this, the province aims to realize its goal of having approximately 20,000 hectares of production forests certified under sustainable forest management by 2030.
Increasing the area of certified forests and expanding organic production models not only helps improve the income of people in forest areas but also makes a significant contribution to Quang Ninh's green economic development goals. More importantly, FSC and PEFC-certified forests, along with organic raw material areas, ensure the maintenance of biodiversity, protect the environment, and mitigate the impacts of climate change, thereby contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
