Beijing is likely to order nationwide steel output cuts to tackle overcapacity and persistent weakness in construction activity, Baosteel Group said.
According to data from the General Administration of Customs, China's steel bar exports reached 839,687 tons in the first quarter, up 112% year-on-year. Meanwhile, steel coil exports reached 1.43 million tons, up 55% year-on-year; steel billet exports reached 1.44 million tons, 10 times higher than the same period.
Meanwhile, in India, in the financial year 2024/2025 (ending March 31), Tata Steel Group increased steel production by 4.3% compared to the same period last year to 21.7 million tons. This is the highest figure in the company's history as recorded from the financial report.
In another raw material development, spot metallurgical coal prices in China fell $4/mt to $175/mt EXW (ex-works) from April 25 to May 9, according to Kallanish . Domestic coal mines are currently facing overcapacity, forcing them to cut prices.
The oversupply of metallurgical coal in the Chinese market has led to a decline in coal imports. Shipments of metallurgical coal from Mongolia are stuck at the border due to a lack of orders. Meanwhile, purchases from Australia have not been recorded during this period. The situation may only change after inventories at mines are reduced.
Amid overcapacity, Chinese mines are trying to sell their inventories to overseas markets. China’s metallurgical coal exports rose 1.8 percent to 1.41 million tonnes in the first quarter, with March alone up 23.6 percent to 460,000 tonnes.
Meanwhile, demand from coking plants remained stable thanks to the steel industry. As a result, coking coal exports from China fell 26.5% to 1.77 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2025. March alone saw a 15.6% drop to 760 thousand tonnes.
