US President Donald Trump said the United States was holding trade talks with many countries, including China, helping to improve market sentiment and sending Chinese stocks higher on Tuesday.

China's Commerce Ministry confirmed that Beijing is "evaluating" a proposal from Washington to hold talks regarding the 145% tariff proposed by the US President.

On the other hand, newly released data showed that China's services activity grew at its slowest pace in seven months in April, weighed down by trade uncertainty and tariffs from the US, according to a private survey.

The steel market is worried about the risk of a global recession due to tariffs, while warning that anti-dumping measures could reduce steel demand in the near future, according to brokerage Hexun Futures.

Output at steelmakers using blast furnaces in China increased further between April 25 and 30, according to consultancy Mysteel.

However, downstream demand is expected to weaken in May as the domestic market enters the low season, while overseas demand continues to be pressured by trade barriers, according to Hexun.

On the supply side, total iron ore inventories at Chinese ports rose 2.24% week on week to 136.8 million tonnes as of April 30, according to data from Steelhome.

Other steel products on the DCE continued to trade less actively. Coking coal fell 1.73%, while coke fell sharply by 2.88%.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, steel futures were trading almost flat. Rebar fell 0.61%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.19%, stainless steel rose about 0.4%, while wire rod (SWRcv1) was flat.
