World oil prices increased slightly at the beginning of the week

According to the update from Oilprice at 12:00 a.m. on May 19 (Vietnam time), Brent oil price reached 65.33 USD/barrel, up 0.88 USD (equivalent to 1.36%). WTI oil also recorded a similar increase, up to 62.49 USD/barrel - up 0.87 USD (equivalent to 1.41%).

For the week, Brent rose more than 2% and WTI rose 2.4%, but the increase was only half the pace of last week, suggesting the market is starting to correct slightly after a period of strong growth.

OPEC+’s decision to delay a planned production increase in December has helped support oil prices, but it has also raised concerns about the group’s lack of commitment or ability to implement a plan to stabilize supply in 2025, Reuters reported.

Conversely, some analysts say the delay, coupled with efforts to restore output in major member countries such as Saudi Arabia, could increase volatility in energy markets, and make investors hesitant to expand new production due to a lack of clear signals.

Goldman Sachs forecasts that WTI oil prices will average around $56/barrel by the end of 2025 and could fall to $52/barrel by 2026. The main reason is that the US government's energy policy continues to prioritize maintaining low fuel prices to support domestic consumers.

Against this backdrop, OPEC+ is still trying to balance protecting market share and controlling members who violate quotas. Flexible production increases, especially from Saudi Arabia, could put pressure on oil prices to decline slightly in the short term.

Specifically, E5 RON 92 gasoline increased by 403 VND/liter, currently selling at 19,180 VND/liter. RON 95 gasoline increased by 415 VND/liter, to 19,594 VND/liter, approaching the 20,000 VND/liter mark after many months of remaining below this threshold.

In this management period, the Ministry of Industry and Trade - Ministry of Finance decided not to set aside and not to use the Petroleum Price Stabilization Fund for all petroleum and oil products.

Since the beginning of 2025, the domestic gasoline market has undergone 20 price adjustments. Of these, there have been 9 sessions of decrease, 8 sessions of increase and 3 sessions of opposite adjustments.

The slight increase in domestic gasoline prices this period is considered to be consistent with the recovery trend of Brent and WTI oil prices in the international market, and is also affected by OPEC+'s output policy and global economic expectations in the second half of the year.
