Connie the dog was rescued from the container.
NBC reported on February 5th that a dog was fortunate enough to be rescued by U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) personnel after becoming trapped in a container at a port in Texas.
The dog, later named Connie, was trapped in a shipping container and had been inside for at least eight days before being discovered on January 31.
Connie was rescued by USCG marine science technicians Bryan Wainscott, Lucas Loe, Ryan McMahon, and Jose Reyes. They were conducting a random inspection of containers when they heard barking and scratching coming from inside one, according to a statement from the USCG Heartland (Texas) region.
The container was stacked over 7 meters high and required a crane to lower. "When they lowered the container and opened the door, a dog jumped out," according to USCG Heartland. The officers said the dog was tired, hungry, and very happy to see the rescuers.
Images posted on the USCG Heartland Facebook page show Connie wagging its tail, sniffing around, and drinking water after its escape. Coast Guard officials said Connie had been stranded for at least eight days without water or food, so it was emaciated and dirty when rescued.
Authorities have not yet determined the origin of the container, but it is full of used cars, most likely en route to be sold overseas for parts. Based on this information, Officer Corrine Zilnicki of the USCG Heartland believes it was most likely inside a car at a used car lot when it was accidentally placed in the container.
Connie was taken to the Pasadena Animal Shelter for care before being transferred to the Forever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR) organization. They plan to find "a wonderful home she deserves." FCAR's Facebook post received many comments from people interested in adopting Connie.
