On August 14th, the multinational technology corporation Apple, headquartered in the US, announced that it will resume production of some high-end smartwatch models with blood oxygen level measurement features.
Previously, the company had removed the blood oxygen level measurement feature from some Apple Watch models due to a patent dispute.
According to Apple, the redesigned feature is being applied to Apple Watch models in the Series 9, 10, and Ultra 2, via a software update for both iPhone and Apple Watch.
Users in the US who own these watch models but do not yet have the blood oxygen level measurement feature can access the new feature by updating their iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and their Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1.
After the update, sensor data from the Blood Oxygen app on the Apple Watch will be measured and calculated on the paired iPhone. Users can then view the results in the Respiratory section of the Health app.
Apple says a new ruling by the U.S. Customs Agency allows the company to reintroduce a similar but redesigned feature, meaning the new feature is not entirely the same as the old technology Apple had previously removed.
Apple also confirmed that the update will not affect watches previously purchased with the original Blood Oxygen feature, nor Apple Watch products sold outside the United States.
Previously, in January 2024, Apple temporarily suspended sales of some of its latest smartwatch models in the US market due to a patent dispute with California-based medical technology company Masimo.
Masimo claims that the company invented the technology and that Apple hired key personnel from Masimo to gain access to its technical and technological know-how.
Masimo filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), which issued an injunction prohibiting Apple from importing into the U.S. watch models manufactured overseas that allegedly infringe on its patent for blood oxygen level measurement technology.
For its part, Apple does not recognize the ITC's ruling and has filed an appeal with the U.S. Federal Court.
Apple subsequently removed the aforementioned technology from the related watch models and quickly resumed business operations in the market.
Apple is currently promoting health and fitness tracking features on its smartwatches, including detection of arrhythmias, sleep apnea, and the harmful effects of noise during sleep.
