On August 14, the US-based multinational technology corporation Apple announced that it will re-produce some high-end smartwatch models with the feature of measuring blood oxygen levels.

Previously, the company removed the blood oxygen level measurement feature on some Apple Watch models due to patent disputes.

The redesigned feature is available on Apple Watch Series 9, 10, and Ultra 2 models via an iPhone and Apple Watch software update, Apple announced.

Users in the US who own the above watch models but do not have the blood oxygen measurement feature can access the new feature by updating their iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1.

After the update, sensor data from the Blood Oxygen app on Apple Watch will be measured and calculated on the paired iPhone. Users can then view the results in the Respiratory section of the Health app.

Apple said a new ruling from the US Customs Service allows it to reintroduce the same feature but in a redesigned way, meaning the new feature is not exactly the same as the old technology Apple removed.

Apple also confirmed that the update will not affect previously purchased watches with the original Blood Oxygen feature, nor Apple Watch products sold outside the US.

Previously, in January 2024, Apple temporarily stopped selling some of its latest smartwatch models in the US market due to a patent dispute with California-based medical technology company Masimo.

Masimo claims that it invented the technology and Apple recruited key Masimo personnel to gain access to its technical know-how and technology.

Masimo filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC), which issued an injunction banning Apple from importing into the US watches manufactured overseas that allegedly infringed on its patented technology for measuring blood oxygen levels.

For its part, Apple does not accept the ITC's ruling and has filed an appeal with the US Federal Court.

Apple then removed the technology from the relevant watch models and quickly resumed sales in the market.

Apple is now pushing health and fitness tracking features on its smartwatch, including detecting heart rhythm disorders, sleep apnea and the effects of harmful noise on sleep./.
