Vietnamese youth need to make an effort to improve their English skills.

(NLĐO) - English departments at universities mainly focus on in-depth language training and teaching, while language centers are stronger in skills development.

On the morning of December 21st, the Ho Chi Minh City Association for the Study and Teaching of English (TESOL Ho Chi Minh City Association), together with Horizon TESOL, the operating unit, held a ceremony to award TESOL teaching methodology certificates to nearly 100 students and signed strategic cooperation agreements with 25 educational organizations, including universities and English language centers.

Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Association for English Language Research and Teaching, said that the event not only honored students who had completed the TESOL teacher training program but also marked an important step in improving the quality of training to closely align with practical needs, promoting professional activities and career development for students in the English language teaching field.

At the event, the Ho Chi Minh City TESOL Association signed cooperation agreements with the English, Foreign Language, and International Training Institutes of universities such as: Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Gia Dinh University, Van Hien University, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Binh Duong University, and 20 reputable domestic and international educational organizations and English language centers such as British Council, National Geographic, FAHASA, IDP, DOL English, VIETOP, Ms. Ngan's English, IELTS Master, Minh Khuu Academy, Global American Academy, Wewin Education…

Speaking with a reporter from the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc assessed that English departments in universities mainly focus on in-depth language training and teaching, while foreign language centers tend to focus more on skills. He stated that the role of the association is to connect English departments and foreign language centers to facilitate the exchange of resources, job opportunities, teaching opportunities, and research opportunities within the English teacher community.

Dr. Loc also believes that for those born in the 1970s and the early 1980s, English is a crucial "weapon" because it's a tool for earning extra income, as those with good English skills will stand out in their jobs and workplaces.

"Although the demand for English is very high, according to international rankings, Vietnam is still only in the middle group in terms of English proficiency. This shows that young Vietnamese people still need to make more effort to improve their English skills," said Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc.
