An exemplary and happy family, Mrs. Luu Thi Doi (top left in the photo), from Vi Thanh 1 commune, dedicates much of her time to actively participate in community-benefiting activities with the local people.
Maintain order, cultivate happiness.
Ms. Le Thanh Ha, Secretary of the Party Branch of Hamlet 3A, Tan Hoa Commune, Can Tho City, is affectionately known by her neighbors as "the keeper of family unity." In her three-generation household, at 65 years old, she enthusiastically takes on the responsibilities of cooking, caring for her grandchildren, and preparing heartwarming family meals. For her, the most precious aspect of a family is harmony, love, and mutual respect. She confided: "We may have little material wealth, but we must preserve love and morality. A peaceful home, well-behaved children and grandchildren – that is my greatest joy."
Ms. Le Thi Thanh, Ms. Ha's daughter, emotionally recounted: "My mother is the emotional support of our whole family. I work all day, and sometimes my mind is stressed, but as soon as I get home and see my mother cooking and helping my grandchildren with their studies, I feel so peaceful. My mother taught my siblings and me to live simply and to be considerate of each other. Thanks to that, my siblings and I have never raised our voices at each other."
Not only has she built a happy home, but for over a decade, Mrs. Ha's family has consistently achieved the title of "Exemplary Cultural Family," effectively implementing the "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" model. She actively encourages her neighbors to protect the environment and prevent social evils. For many years, Mrs. Ha has also used her savings to buy notebooks and pens for orphans and donated health insurance cards to needy elderly people.
Living a virtuous life and setting a good example for her children and grandchildren to follow is also the tradition of Mrs. Pham Thi Be's family in Hamlet 7, Vinh Vien Commune, Can Tho City. At 72 years old, she still regularly wakes up early every day to water her vegetable garden and ornamental plants, and exercise with her grandchildren.
Besides taking care of their health, Mrs. Bé also teaches her grandchildren how to cook, fold clothes, and greet politely. “I have five grandchildren, both boys and girls. Each one has a different personality, so you can’t teach them all the same way. The important thing is that as grandparents and parents, we must be close to them and listen so they can share. A warm home is essential for children and grandchildren to learn to love each other,” Mrs. Bé said.
Nguyen Thi Mai, the granddaughter, recounted: “I like being at home with my grandmother the most. She teaches me how to do chores, tells stories about how my parents were poor but still excelled in their studies. She tells me to be compassionate and to study hard so that I can help others in the future.”
Mrs. Bé reflected: "Now that my children and grandchildren are all busy, I try to maintain the habit of eating meals together. The food is simple, but eating together makes me feel warm and comforted. I only hope that my children and grandchildren will know how to love and support each other; that is the most precious asset I can leave behind."
Happiness comes from simple things.
For Mrs. Luu Thi Doi, 68 years old, residing in Hamlet 8, Vi Thanh 1 Commune, happiness in old age is seeing her children and grandchildren grow up and live decent lives.
Mrs. Đời confided: “I tell the children that being good at studying is good, but they must also be diligent, loving, and hardworking. I often say that their parents were poor in the past, but now that they have received an education and have stable jobs, they must improve their skills and earn an honest income so they won't be inferior to their older siblings,” Mrs. Đời shared.
Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Đời still manages the family's finances with her "beekeeping" model, earning tens of millions of dong each month. She also teaches her grandson (in 6th grade) math and her granddaughter sewing. Thanks to her hard work, her children and grandchildren are all independent and appreciate the value of labor.
Beyond simply building happy homes, Ms. Doi, as the head of the Women's Association in Hamlet 8, has supported and mobilized many members to overcome poverty. In addition, she actively mobilizes social resources to support the construction of seven "shelters of love" for women facing housing difficulties, sponsors one orphan, and contributes to the local poverty reduction efforts. For Ms. Doi, "old age doesn't mean stopping, but rather the time to give the most meaningful things."
Keeping the flame of love alive and spreading the values of family life, these women, even at an age rarely seen before, still choose to live beautifully: quietly nurturing their homes and passing on to their children and grandchildren the values of love and kindness.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City and Chairwoman of the City Women's Union, remarked: "Elderly women are the soul of each family, the guardians of traditions, connecting generations with love. From these simple examples, their descendants learn how to live with compassion and kindness, and together build lasting happiness."
