Besides taking care of their health, Mrs. Bé also teaches her grandchildren how to cook, fold clothes, and greet respectfully. “I have five grandchildren, both boys and girls. Each one has a different personality, so you can’t teach them all the same way. The important thing is that as grandparents and parents, we must be close to them and listen so they can share. A warm home is essential for children and grandchildren to learn to love each other,” Mrs. Bé said.
Nguyen Thi Mai, the granddaughter, recounted: “I like being at home with my grandmother the most. She teaches me how to do chores, tells stories about how my parents were poor but still excelled in their studies. She tells me to be compassionate and to study hard so that I can help others in the future.”
Mrs. Bé reflected: "Now that my children and grandchildren are all busy, I try to maintain the habit of eating meals together. The food is simple, but eating together makes me feel warm and comforted. I only hope that my children and grandchildren will know how to love and support each other; that is the most precious asset I can leave behind."
Happiness comes from simple things.
For Mrs. Luu Thi Doi, 68 years old, residing in Hamlet 8, Vi Thanh 1 Commune, happiness in old age is seeing her children and grandchildren grow up and live decent lives.
Mrs. Đời confided: “I tell the children that being good at studying is good, but they must also be diligent, loving, and hardworking. I often say that their parents were poor in the past, but now that they have received an education and have stable jobs, they must improve their skills and earn an honest income so they won't be inferior to their older siblings,” Mrs. Đời shared.
Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Đời still manages the family's finances with her "beekeeping" model, earning tens of millions of dong each month. She also teaches her grandson (in 6th grade) math and her granddaughter sewing. Thanks to her hard work, her children and grandchildren are all independent and appreciate the value of labor.
Beyond simply building happy homes, Ms. Doi, as the head of the Women's Association in Hamlet 8, has supported and mobilized many members to overcome poverty. In addition, she actively mobilizes social resources to support the construction of seven "shelters of love" for women facing housing difficulties, sponsors one orphan, and contributes to the local poverty reduction efforts. For Ms. Doi, "old age doesn't mean stopping, but rather the time to give the most meaningful things."
Keeping the flame of love alive and spreading the values of family life, these women, even at an age rarely seen before, still choose to live beautifully: quietly nurturing their homes and passing on to their children and grandchildren the values of love and kindness.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City and Chairwoman of the City Women's Union, remarked: "Elderly women are the soul of each family, the guardians of traditions, connecting generations with love. From these simple examples, their descendants learn how to live with compassion and kindness, and together build lasting happiness."
