Between the two extremes of hate and love.

The relationship between artists and their fans (supporters) and anti-fans (haters) is a timeless tale of love and hate. Arguments between them are commonplace on social media, but knowing how to love appropriately and hate in a civilized way is something both sides need to consider.

Insulting each other

“I used to enjoy listening to singer LQ sing. But in the past few days, after reading the derogatory and even curses directed at her audience by some viewers, I stopped listening to her altogether,” shared Nguyen Thi Tam (44 years old, residing in Di An ward, Ho Chi Minh City) after the controversy between LQ and her audience. The incident stemmed from LQ responding to a viewer's comment on the Threads platform. Perhaps due to a misunderstanding of the comment, the singer retorted with harsh words. Afterward, LQ continued to post on Facebook, denying losing control or using vulgar language, stating that her recent reactions were within the limits of self-defense due to repeated instances of anti-fan groups fabricating false information that damaged her reputation. “I know I’m an artist, and I understand and endure the downsides of the profession. But, I’m also human, and sometimes I can’t take it anymore,” LQ angrily shared.

The incident involving singer LQ is not the first time the public has witnessed a clash between artists and audiences. Numerous singers, actors, and celebrities such as Ho Ngoc Ha, Hoai Lam, Le Giang, Vo Hoang Yen, Mac Van Khoa, Ky Duyen, Doan Thien An… have been scrutinized and attacked by audiences regarding their private lives, families, and careers. Some, unable to maintain composure, engaged in online "verbal battles" with anti-fans, causing significant uproar. There was even a case like Jack J-97, who included offensive lyrics directed at anti-fans in his personal songs and performed them on stage, resulting in a fine and a nine-month performance ban. Similarly, a Meritorious Artist, due to frustration, posted vulgar and offensive content on social media, leading to administrative penalties and audience backlash, nearly ending his performing career.

In a recent briefing, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports also commented on LQ's case, reminding those working in the arts to always cultivate ethical conduct and behave courteously and respectfully towards the audience. Above all, the audience is the driving force behind an artist's professional success.

Learn how to behave in a civilized manner.

Audiences are the foundation, the measure of success, and the "force" that can elevate an artist's image. And it is also these same audiences, when unsupportive, who become overly aggressive anti-fans, ready to "throw stones." Many cases of anti-fans spreading fake information have seriously affected the lives of artists. A prime example is singer Phuong My Chi, who twice had to speak out to deny false accusations that she used banned substances and filmed sensitive videos. Ms. Pham Dac My Tran, Acting Head of the Electronic Information Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, stated: “The Code of Conduct on Social Media clearly prohibits the use of offensive language, violations of moral standards; spreading fake news, false information... causing public outrage, affecting social order and safety… Legally, we have sufficient regulations to regulate and handle violations related to the provision and transmission of information online.”

As social media platforms become increasingly open, the expression of love and hate behind keyboards is becoming more explosive and intense. It's time for stronger measures to "clean up" social media so that the online space is not a "legal vacuum" as many mistakenly believe.

Dr. Pham Thi Thuy, a psychologist from the Regional Political Academy II, shared: "The recent events serve as a reminder to artists about communication skills. Of course, they sometimes get hurt and lack the composure to 'choose their words carefully,' but artists, or anyone else, when attacked online, should slow down, maintain a reasonable distance in their behavior and statements. Artists should avoid unnecessary arguments, which can easily damage their reputation and hurt the public. Audiences should also be civilized when participating in social media, using their freedom of speech within the limits permitted by law."
