According to Kyodo news agency, during the first working session, diplomatic officials of the countries agreed that solidarity plays an important role in resolving geopolitical issues in the Indo-Pacific region, including those related to China.
According to the Japanese government, at the opening discussion of the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the top diplomats also reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability regarding Taiwan (China), while acknowledging the need to establish constructive and stable relations with Beijing.
It is expected that in the next two days, the G7's top diplomats will discuss issues such as the Ukraine crisis, nuclear disarmament, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan...
There is also the issue of strengthening cooperation with developing countries in the global South, many of which remain neutral on the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the issue of food security.
The G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, attended by the heads of state of the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Canada, Italy and an official from the European Union (EU), aims to prepare the agenda for the G7 Summit scheduled to take place in Hiroshima from May 19-21.
The 49th G7 Summit is Japan's most important diplomatic event this year.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell was unable to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting due to Covid-19, but he had a phone call with Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa on the sidelines of the meeting.
EU officials have expressed sympathy with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio over the smoke bomb attack in Wakayama on April 15.
The two diplomats discussed the priorities of the Japanese G7 Presidency and reviewed foreign policy issues of mutual concern, as well as welcomed the EU-Japan approach to joint engagement in multilateral fora and commitments within the G7 framework.
Mr. Borrell stressed the importance of the G7 discussion on China and North Korea in the current geopolitical and regional context, and stressed the need to continue to cooperate with like-minded partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
Recognizing the growing geopolitical uncertainties and pressures on the security environment, the EU and Japan highlighted the need to continue to cooperate strongly in multilateral fora. They also expressed their readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the pursuit of peace and security.
