The dark side of the screenwriting profession: The 'risks' of the screenwriting profession

Nowadays, most screenwriters work independently or in groups, so it is difficult to avoid the disadvantages and risks of the profession. Besides, in the digital age, the screenwriting profession is also easily eliminated by the "storm" of AI.

" OUTPUT" IS EASILY INTERCEPTED

A young, anonymous, new screenwriter shared his risk after receiving offers to collaborate on ideas for projects together. Over the course of 3 years, this person continuously wrote 10 scripts, but due to "objective factors" such as budget, actors or changes in investors..., he did not receive any remuneration to sustain his life and said he suffered great mental loss.

Another person is known by experts as the "million dollar screenwriter" because many of the highest-grossing films to date were written by him. He shared that once he received a cooperation offer, after finishing the first script, the producer said that the quality was not up to standard, so he terminated the contract and paid 30% of the screenwriter's royalties according to the signed terms. Later, he learned that the producer asked another screenwriter for a much lower price to edit his script a bit and put it into production. When the film was released, the screenwriter filed a lawsuit because the film still used most of the main plot of the script he wrote, but the case went nowhere because there were no specific sanctions and laws in this case.

"Screenwriting is a relatively high-risk profession because there is no guaranteed "output" for the work if the screenwriters work independently. There are many projects that cannot be made into films not because of the script but because of other objective factors, and the first person to suffer is the screenwriter. In addition, when you put too much effort into a script but it is not realized on film, it is a feeling of great disappointment," screenwriter Vu Liem shared.

As a screenwriter and producer of more than 20 films, Mr. Nguyen Cao Tung said that the screenwriters also face a lot of pressure behind the scenes, such as excessive script changes without consultation, even scripts being changed up to 70% without prior discussion. The film's edit is changed regardless and without respect, without consulting the screenwriter's opinion and then not recorded in the media. "But the most heartbreaking thing is that the script idea is plagiarized and changed without being able to sue because the screenwriter does not use copyright and legal tools clearly," Mr. Tung emphasized.

INTEGRATION AND ELIMINATION IN THE AI "STORM"

In the age of digital technology , the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming popular in artistic creation, requiring screenwriters to be up to date. Screenwriter Pham Dinh Hai shared that for older screenwriters, technology is always a barrier; for young screenwriters, AI technology clearly supports script writing a lot. But in the long run, AI is a potential danger. Because AI increases labor productivity, sometimes doubling or tripling, the demand for screenwriters will decrease. At this time, young screenwriters will be the first to be eliminated by the market.

"If you don't want to be eliminated, you have to use AI to catch up with the productivity of others. But when you are a young screenwriter, you have not yet formed a creative mindset, style, do not have a deep understanding of theories, and are not yet proficient with skills, you will not have the opportunity to perfect those things, so using AI is very dangerous. Looking at the big picture, when the older generation of screenwriters retires, there will only be screenwriters in the generation using AI. But AI itself needs a source of data to develop. That source comes from human creativity. When traditional screenwriters retire, or are eliminated due to poor productivity, AI will have no way to operate other than "eating" itself. So we will have a creative system that chews and chews, all creative industries (including screenwriters) will stop developing," analyzed the screenwriter of the movie Doc Dao .

According to Mr. Vu Liem, there are currently some extreme screenwriters who do not use AI, but he believes that AI has the ability to synthesize extremely well in a short time. In large-capacity TV dramas (average 30 episodes), screenwriters can forget some details or even the names of certain characters that are important links in previous episodes... and AI with simple commands will help find them in just a few seconds. However, Mr. Vu Liem commented: "At this point, I still think that AI cannot replace professional screenwriters when it comes to feature film content."

Speaking more about this issue, Mr. Nguyen Cao Tung said that AI is an effective tool for screenwriters, not a challenge to their work. No one can replace screenwriters in shaping the main idea and creativity. AI can help develop detailed tasks in character traits, story lines or each segment. "However, the Vietnamese spirit and true human emotions are not present in AI. Screenwriters now compete not only with each other, but also with "machines" because AI can create many scenarios in a split second and requires screenwriters to adapt continuously. Those who do not update will fall behind," Mr. Tung acknowledged.
