Google fined over $314 million for misusing user data in the US

The plaintiffs allege that Google collected information from phones while they were asleep for the company's own purposes, such as targeted advertising.

A jury in San Jose, California, USA has just issued a verdict forcing Google to pay more than $314.6 million in compensation to Android smartphone users in this state, after Google was found to have illegally used customers' mobile data.

According to the ruling, Alphabet Inc. - Google's parent company - violated users' privacy by collecting and transmitting information from devices even when they were inactive, consuming users' mobile data without consent.

The class action lawsuit, filed in state court in 2019, represents about 14 million Android users in California.

The plaintiffs allege that Google collected information from phones while they were asleep for the company's own purposes, such as targeted advertising.

Google said it would appeal the ruling, saying the decision "misunderstands services that are critical to the security, performance, and reliability of Android devices."

Another group of plaintiffs has filed a similar lawsuit in federal court in San Jose, representing Android users in the remaining 49 states. The trial is scheduled for April 2026./.
