Google Chrome will warn desktop users if they are using an extension that has been flagged as dangerous and has been removed from the Chrome Web Store. Safe Browsing is enabled to block websites on Google's list of potentially unsafe websites.
Google adds many new features to the Chrome browser. |
According to Product Manager Sabine Borsay, Chrome Safety Check on the desktop will run automatically in the background. Warnings will appear in the three-dot menu in Chrome so users can take the necessary actions.
Additionally, Google will expand Safety Check to automatically revoke permissions, such as access to a user's location or microphone, for sites that haven't been visited in a long time.
Safety Check is also being upgraded to flag less interactive sites that display too many notifications and allow users to quickly disable them.
First launched in December 2020, Safety Check compares login credentials to those exposed in data breaches. It also checks for weak, easy-to-guess passwords that could leave users vulnerable to cyberattacks or cracking.
In September 2023, Google announced that the Safe Browsing feature had been activated to protect users from the risk of phishing attacks, using a shortened list of malicious URL links stored in the browser.
In the near future, Google will also introduce a new Chrome feature that allows desktop users to save tab groups and continue browsing on other desktop devices.
