According to a post on Google Keywords, the company has added five new features to the Android operating system, while also releasing the latest version of Android 15 on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Google also revealed that these features will soon be available on Pixel devices in the coming weeks.
Google has just announced a series of new features.
1. Upgrade the TalkBack feature with Gemini AI.
TalkBack, a screen-reading feature for the visually impaired or those with low vision, has been improved with the help of the Gemini AI system. This feature can now provide more detailed descriptions of displayed content, including product images on e-commerce sites, gallery photos, text messages, and social media posts. According to PCMag, TalkBack uses a cloud-based version of Gemini AI to deliver highly accurate content descriptions.
2. Song search feature for Circle to Search
After a testing period in August 2024, Google officially introduced the song search capability for its Circle to Search feature. Users simply press and hold the Home button or navigation bar to activate Circle to Search, then tap the musical note icon to find information about the song title, artist, and open a YouTube video to learn more. Some Samsung device users have been experiencing this feature in recent weeks, according to Tech Crunch.
3. Supports reading website content aloud.
Google also introduced the “Listen to this page” feature, allowing users to listen to website content on the Chrome browser for mobile devices. Users can listen to blog posts, articles, or recipes, and this feature is especially useful for visually impaired people, those with reading difficulties, or those who prefer listening to reading. The feature supports multiple languages including English, French, German, Arabic, Hindi, and Spanish, with the ability to adjust the voice, reading speed, and rewind.
4. Expand the earthquake warning system.
Google has expanded its earthquake alert system on Android, which was introduced in 2020, to cover all 50 states and 6 territories of the U.S. This feature uses the accelerometer in Android phones as a seismometer, helping to detect tremors and alert users to an ongoing earthquake, while also providing guidance on how to protect lives.
5. Added offline map viewing feature to smartwatches.
WearOS smartwatch users can now view maps offline after downloading them from their phones. According to PCMag, while offline map viewing isn't new, support for smartwatches will help users navigate better when traveling through areas with poor cellular signal.
Android 15 release date
In addition to introducing new features, Google also announced the release of Android 15 on AOSP, although no official launch date has been revealed. Users can update to the beta version of Android 15 if they don't want to wait long, although this version may still contain some minor bugs.
According to predictions from 9to5Google, the official version of Android 15 will be released in October 2024 for supported Pixel devices. For devices from other brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Sony, and OPPO, users may have to wait a few more months.
The list of Pixel devices that will receive the official Android 15 update includes:
Pixel 6 and 6 Pro
Pixel 6a
Pixel 7 and 7 Pro
Pixel 7a
