According to a post on Google Keywords, the company has added five new features to the Android operating system and released the latest version of Android 15 on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Google also revealed that these features will soon be available on Pixel devices in the coming weeks.
Google just announced a bunch of new features.
1. Upgrade TalkBack feature with AI Gemini
TalkBack, the on-screen reading feature for people who are blind or have low vision, has been improved with the help of the Gemini AI system. The feature can now provide more detailed descriptions of displayed content, including product images on e-commerce sites, photos in the gallery, text messages, and social networks. According to PCMag, TalkBack uses a cloud-based version of Gemini AI to provide highly accurate content descriptions.
2. Song search feature for Circle to Search
After a testing period in August 2024, Google officially introduced the ability to search for songs for the Circle to Search feature. Users just need to hold down the Home button or the navigation bar to activate Circle to Search, then tap the music note icon to determine information about the song name, artist, and open the YouTube video to learn more. Some Samsung device users have experienced this feature in recent weeks, according to Tech Crunch.
3. Support reading web page content aloud
Google also introduced a “Listen to this page” feature that lets users listen to web page content on the Chrome mobile browser. Users can listen to blog posts, articles, or recipes, and the feature is especially useful for people who are blind, have difficulty reading, or who prefer listening to reading. The feature supports multiple languages including English, French, German, Arabic, Hindi, and Spanish, with the ability to adjust the voice, speed, and rewind.
4. Expanding earthquake warning system
Google has expanded its earthquake warning system on Android, introduced in 2020, to cover all 50 states and six US territories. The feature uses the accelerometer in Android phones as a seismometer, detecting shaking and alerting users to an ongoing earthquake, while also providing life-saving steps.
5. Add offline map viewing feature on Smartwatch
WearOS smartwatch users can now view offline maps after downloading them from their phones. While offline map viewing isn't new, support for smartwatches will help users navigate better when traveling through areas with poor cellular reception, according to PCMag.
Android 15 release date
In addition to introducing new features, Google also announced the release of Android 15 on AOSP, however, the official release date has not been revealed. Users can update to the beta version of Android 15 if they do not want to wait long, although this version may still have some minor bugs.
According to predictions from 9to5Google, the official version of Android 15 will be released in October 2024 for Pixel devices that are supported to update. For devices from other brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Sony, OPPO, users may have to wait a few more months.
The list of Pixel devices that will get the official Android 15 update includes:
Pixel 6 and 6 Pro
Pixel 6a
Pixel 7 and 7 Pro
Pixel 7a
Pixel Fold
