Google is 'killing off' traditional OTP codes with its Verified Email feature.

According to Android Police , in a continuous effort to optimize the user experience, Google has updated Credential Manager, offering a completely new, secure, faster, and extremely convenient verification method. Therefore, having to exit the app, open Gmail, wait, and then search through your spam folder for the 6-digit verification code will soon become a thing of the past. Google has just launched the 'Verified Email' feature, allowing Android users to register new accounts in an instant.

Instead of relying on OTP codes sent via email, which are prone to delays or loss, the Verified Email feature uses encrypted authentication information directly on your Android device. When registering for a new app, the system automatically compares the information with Gmail stored on your device. If it matches, access is granted immediately without any manual data entry.

After successful registration, Google also encourages users to create a Passkey – a security solution that replaces traditional passwords, making future logins safer and smoother.

Beyond just the registration process, verified emails play a crucial role in account recovery or re-authentication when performing sensitive actions, such as changing core security settings. This is good news for those who frequently use social media apps or manage smart devices in their homes.

Notably, you don't need to own the latest model phone to experience this feature. Google confirms support for all devices running Android 9 or later, as long as the Google Play services are updated to the latest version.

Currently, verified email is only available for personal Google accounts. For business accounts (Google Workspace) or educational accounts, users will still have to use traditional verification methods. Google says it will continue to expand this feature in the future to meet the diverse needs of users worldwide.
