On September 18, 2025, at the 38th Session of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS), the President of IAAS awarded the degree and Academician symbol to Prof. Le Truong Giang, Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), after one year of election.

The title of IAAS Academician is a noble recognition, reserved for only a few outstanding scientists with a leading role and great influence in the international scientific community. Since its inception in 2019 to the 37th Session (2024), IAAS has elected 54 academicians from thousands of outstanding scientists from member organizations.

This is an important milestone event, contributing to raising the status of Vietnamese science in the international community.

Scientists connect Vietnamese knowledge with the world

Prof. Dr. Le Truong Giang is a prestigious expert in many fields of chemistry such as analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, food toxicology and optimization. He has chaired and participated in many projects of high fundamental value and practical application, from modeling chemical reaction kinetics to developing technology for treating organic substances that are difficult to decompose in the environment and controlling toxins in food. To date, he has published hundreds of scientific works in prestigious international journals, which are highly appreciated by the academic community and have a wide influence.

With a solid academic foundation and experience working in an international environment, in his current position, Professor Le Truong Giang directly directs and leads many strategic research cooperation programs between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and prestigious organizations such as the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French Institute for Research for Development (IRD), the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) or the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

In particular, bilateral cooperation programs between VAST and IAAS member organizations not only facilitate academic exchanges, promote joint research and training, but also strengthen connections between member academies, enriching IAAS activities. These cooperations contribute to realizing the criteria of IAAS as a multilateral international organization, working together for the development of global science and technology.

These cooperative activities also demonstrate the efforts to bring Vietnam's research results to the world, affirming the integration and position of Vietnamese science in the international arena. In the context of science and technology being the key driving force for sustainable development, international recognition is an affirmation that the Vietnamese team of scientists has enough stature and capacity to contribute to the country, while at the same time participating deeply in the global scientific community.

Honor reserved for a few outstanding scientists

The International Association of Academy of Sciences (IAAS) was established on September 23, 1993, with the goal of becoming a multilateral scientific and technological organization, linking scientific academies around the world to contribute to the common development of humanity.

Currently, IAAS has 27 official members, including many leading scientific academies with a long history of achievements and development such as the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences, etc.

The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology is one of the founding members since 1993. The IAAS Council, consisting of heads of member institutes, is the highest governing body, deciding on all activities of the organization through a consensus mechanism and meeting annually in mid-September.

The IAAS Academician title was initiated in 2019 to honor outstanding scientists who not only have outstanding research achievements but also play a connecting role and promote cooperation between academic organizations.

The process of voting and awarding titles takes place in three consecutive meetings of the Council: the first year receives nominations from members and approves the list of candidates; the second year conducts voting and issues a resolution on the list of new Academicians; the third year organizes the awarding of degrees and badges in an official meeting.

This is a prestigious title, awarded only to a small number of scientists who have a leading role and great influence in the international scientific community. From 2019 to the 37th session in 2024, IAAS elected 54 Academicians from thousands of excellent candidates from member organizations.

With the honor of Professor Le Truong Giang, Vietnam now has two scientists receiving the title of IAAS Academician. Previously, Professor Chau Van Minh - President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology was elected in 2019. This is a clear demonstration of the maturity, increasingly deep integration and increasingly affirmed position of Vietnamese science in the international arena.

Professor Le Truong Giang was born in 1975, graduated from Hanoi University in 1995 and received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Poitiers (France) in 2003.

Right from the first days of graduation, he was attached to the National Center for Natural Sciences and Technology, the predecessor of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST). During his career, he held many important positions such as: Deputy Director of the Center for Training, Consulting and Technology Transfer; Deputy Head of the International Cooperation Department; Deputy Head and then Head of the Planning and Finance Department of VAST.

On April 4, 2022, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 420/QD-TTg appointing Mr. Le Truong Giang, then Head of the Financial Planning Department, to hold the position of Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
