Earlier this week, Arsenal announced that they had completed the transfer of striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting for $87 million. However, what has excited Gunners fans even more is that Arsenal have decided to give Viktor Gyokeres the number 14 shirt.
The number 14 shirt is a symbol of Arsenal, associated with the name of legendary striker Thierry Henry.
The former French striker wore the number 14 shirt from 1999 to 2007, and scored 228 goals for Arsenal. With the number 14 shirt, Henry became one of the best strikers in the history of Arsenal in particular and the Premier League in general.
Arsenal's decision to hand Gyokeres the number 14 shirt underlines the strong message that the Gunners want the Swedish striker to become the "new Henry".
After Henry left Arsenal, the number 14 shirt went to Theo Walcott (2008-2018), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2018-2021) and Eddie Nketiah (2021-2024). However, none of these players have reached the same level and influence as Henry.
Arsenal finished last season without any trophies. One of the reasons for Arsenal's failure was the lack of a top striker. Therefore, this summer they were determined to recruit Gyokeres for $87 million.
