Memphis Depay, the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer and assist provider, has recovered from a hamstring injury in time for the World Cup. Arsenal's Jurrien Timber has also been called up, despite earlier doubts from manager Ronald Koeman. The Arsenal defender is recovering from an adductor muscle injury. His twin brother, Quinten Timber, is making his first major tournament appearance.
Bournemouth star Justin Kluivert has surprisingly been included in the squad after months battling injury. Kluivert will be useful in the attacking midfield position for the Netherlands, where Tottenham's Xavi Simons will be absent after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in April. Simons is one of two key midfielders who will miss the tournament due to injury, along with PSV captain Jerdy Schouten, who also suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear.
One of Schouten's teammates, midfielder Joey Veerman, wasn't even included in Koeman's preliminary 55-man squad. Veerman hasn't played for the Netherlands since Euro 2024 and recently publicly criticized Koeman's handling of the situation. "If he keeps holding press conferences like that and saying I'm not a good player, then at some point I won't be able to take it anymore. He doesn't need to call me anymore," Veerman told ESPN.
Marten de Roon returns to the Netherlands national team after his last appearance for the national team in March 2024. The Atalanta captain replaces Schouten and Veerman in the 26-man squad. PSV's Guus Til is also a player returning to the national team after a long absence; the six-time international has only played one game for the Netherlands since June 2022.
Stefan de Vrij and Jeremie Frimpong are other notable names who were dropped from the squad due to poor form for Inter Milan and Liverpool, respectively. At the 2026 World Cup, the Netherlands are in Group F, along with Sweden, Japan, and Tunisia.
